Another Expected KO For Jaime Munguia Won’t Mean Much
Another Expected KO For Jaime Munguia Won’t Mean Much
It’s been a familiar situation for unbeaten WBO top middleweight contender Jaime Munguia, as he enters the ring tonight in Guadalajara, Mexico, as an overwhelming favorite against a little known opponent.
The bout is a non-title fight, the seventh one that Munguia has had since he moved up to 160 lb. and stopped Spike O’Sullivan in 11 rounds in January 2020. And therein lies the problem- fight after fight where the Mexican, hard hitting fan favorite hasn’t fought quality enough competition, especially this year.
Munguia has KOs over American Demetrius Ballard in February and Jimmy Kelly in June, but neither have done anything to increase his popularity or leverage for a possible title shot.

Nonetheless, the 26 year old Munguia is back at (40-0, 32 KOs) with his opponent, Argentina’s Gonzalo “El Mago” Coria (21-5, 8 KOs). The 25 year old Argentine has rarely been in with top competition and this includes him having been wiped out in two rounds by Janibek Alimkhanuly in October 2020.
Meanwhile, Munguia was an overwhelming favorite at 10,000-1 and a KO prop of -700 on the BetUS line before they stopped taking wagering on the bout.
So, the only real question, as Dan Rafael and I debated here on our BetUS Friday Boxing show is whether Munguia gets the KO early or late?
Munguia is at least complimenting his opponent
“I am very excited to be in Guadalajara! We are ready to bring a show to the fans here. In boxing, there are no simple opponents, and Coria is no exception. We hope that once we pass this hurdle, we are set for a big fight in 2023,” Munguia said to the media Thursday.
But, at this point, he has to fight another contender or agree to meet Alimkhanuly who just won a 12 round decision over Denzel Bentley in his first title defense last weekend in Las Vegas.
Other than that, it’s simply a waste of everyone’s time to watch Munguia fight little more than “stay busy and get your KO” competition like he has this year.
