In a battle of professional stars from other sports, former NBA All-Star Deron Williams scored a four round split decision over former NFL great Frank Gore Saturday night in Tampa, FL.

Fighting on the Jake Paul-Tyron Woodley Rematch PPV undercard, Williams used his superior height and reach to land constant right hands on the former University of Miami and 49ers/Colts star running back on his way to the victory in both of their Heavyweight debuts.

Williams won by scores of 40-35, 38-37, while the third judge had the fight 38-37 for Gore.

Williams did score a knockdown in round three, as he trapped Gore in his own corner. Williams landed an overhand right to the side of Gore’s head. Gore squatted but Williams caught him again with a right to the head and put him down.

That knockdown turned out to be the difference on the deciding judge’s card.

Gore, who was drafted in the third round by the 49ers and ran for over 10,000 yds. in his NFL career, was clearly winded after a first round, where he actually landed a couple of right hands. But, from there he struggled to much other than land an occasional single punch.

Meanwhile, Williams, the former college All American at Illinois was the 3rd pick in the NBA draft by the Utah Jazz and a multi-time all star there and in Brooklyn, was the fresher fighter throughout. And, it showed with him constantly scoring more, but afterwards was honest about how tough it was to be in a boxing ring,

“I’m gonna sit my ass down and let the professionals handle this s%*t,” Williams told Showtime in the ring. “At times I was looking terrible out there. My last three-four sparring sessions I was on point, but it was different coming out here…I came out here in front of everybody and tried it.”

Williams was adamant that he likely won’t ever box again. Meanwhile, he did enough to earn the win with the official punch numbers showing Williams landing 48 total punches to Gore’s 39.

As for Gore, he mentioned to Showtime that he would be interested in trying to fight, again at a later date.
