Jermall Charlo On Fighting Montiel “Going To Whoop His Ass”

Coming up next month in his hometown of Houston, Jermall Charlo gets set to make the latest defense of his WBC Middleweight Title and on Tuesday, he made it clear what he intends to do to his little known Mexican challenger, Juan Macías Montiel.

Never one to lack for bravado, Charlo bluntly told the assembled media at the Toyota Center and on virtual video that he expects nothing short of wiping out Montiel,

“June 19, it’s going to be fireworks. A parade. A celebration,” Charlo said. “It’s a dream come true to be able to fight in my city and I get a chance to do it with a crowd. Tune in and get your tickets because it’s going to be a great night of boxing….I’m going to whoop his ass. He doesn’t stand a chance. They’re all confident. I got the belt. The belt ain’t going nowhere. Toyota Center, get ready.”

Charlo, 31-0, 22 KOs, gets set to make the fifth defense of his WBC 160 lb. title and his first since he decisioned Sergiy Derevyanchenko in September the Premier Boxing Champions/Showtime “bubble” at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut. Charlo dominated one of the top Middleweight contenders in the world over 12 rounds and has been waiting for his next opportunity.

As for Montiel, he’s 22-4-2 and only 3-2-1 in his last six fights. That includes a quick KO loss to WBO #1 Middleweight Jaime Munguia in 2018. He did score a KO over veteran James Kirkland in December that put him in position for the Charlo shot.

“Montiel is fearless,” Charlo said Tuesday trying to defend the selection of his opponent.

“He’s a fighter that I think deserves a chance. At this point, he understands where he’s at. This is a big fight. A lot of people may not know who Montiel is, just like I didn’t, but he’s a strong fighter. The people want to see me get tested, right? I want to see those big fights, too. In a matter of time, they’ll come. But Montiel should be a good fight.”

Charlo hopes to be in position for a unification fight, potentially with current IBF champ and former Undisputed 160 lb. title holder, Gennady Golovkin.

There is also speculation that Charlo could move up to 168 lb. in a mega-fight with Unified Champ, Canelo Alvarez, as well. That’s contingent on if/when Canelo decides on his next multi-fight deal either staying with Matchroom Boxing/DAZN or coming to PBC with either Fox/Showtime being his PPV outlet.
