Report- Floyd Mayweather-Logan Paul exhibition coming in June?

In the latest development in the newfound success of YouTuber stars and social media influencers helping enhance interest, viewership and revenue for boxing, it looks like former multi-division unbeaten world champion Floyd Mayweather will in fact fight an exhibition with YouTube celebrity Logan Paul later this Summer. Or will he?

First, Mike Coppinger, insider for the Athletic reported late Wednesday night that the Mayweather exhibition, which had been tabled from earlier this year, will now take place on June 5th,

Further, Coppinger’s social media posts and story indicated that it will actually now be part of a larger CBS / Showtime deal for Al Haymon and Premier Boxing Champions, including on Pay-per-view. Reportedly, PBC and Fox Sports have ben negotiating ending their multi-year agreement earlier than when the contract runs out at the end of 2021.

This update about Showtime and PPV contradicts what was originally announced by Mayweather Promotions back in December about a proposed Mayweather-Paul exhibition. As we wrote then, Mayweather was touting his own pay-per-view arm and a Fammio website and app, as a way to purchase the pay-per-view at a cheaper price in advance on the February proposed date.

Obviously, Mayweather and Paul never followed through and fought back in February and the idea had cooled.

That is until everyone saw the spectacle last Saturday night in Atlanta were Paul’s brother Jake Paul knocked out former amateur wrestler / MMA fighter Ben Askren in the first round of the main event of the Tiller Fight Club PPV.

There continues to be reporting the Triller may have had over 1.5 million pay-per-view buys for a massive financial windfall for the online service that only got into boxing with a Mike Tyson exhibition bout late last year. Although, we continue to point out that the PPV number has never been verified by anyone outside of Triller, as being close to correct.

Still, Mayweather is looking to cash-in, as he always has, including his last actual fight in the ring having been against MMA Megastar Conor McGregor whom he defeated in a boxing match in August of 2017.

For their side, Mayweather and his spokesperson / confidant Leonard Ellerbe immediately shot back on social media that Coppinger has the story wrong.

However, Ellerbe did not deny that Mayweather is still looking to fight Paul and maybe, even on that same date. The insults seem to center about who’s in charge of the promotion and maybe, where it’s airing.

Mayweather, who retired with a 50-0 record, is five division World Champ with previous career wins over the likes of Arturo Gatti, Oscar De La Hoya, Miguel Cotto, Canelo Alvarez and Manny Pacquiao. Mayweather was voted “Fighter of the Decade” for the 2010’s by the Boxing Writers Association of America late last year.

As for Paul, he has been in the boxing ring before fighting as part of Matchroom Boxing card in Los Angeles in November of 2019. That’s when he fought in a six-three minute rounds, sanctioned Crusierweight fight against fellow British, YouTube personality KSI. KSI won the split decision with actual California judges scoring the bout.

Paul fought previously as a Crusierweight and Mayweather’s last fights were at the Jr. Middleweight limit. So there will have to be an agreed on weight range for the two fighters and it’s still not clear how many rounds it would be scheduled, etc.

Also, Coppinger points out that proposed Mayweather-Logan Paul on June 5th is the same night that Thriller is rolling out his next fight card. This one with Undisputed lightweight World Champ Teofimo Lopez headlining against Australian George kambosos is in the main event in South Florida. Former Undisputed World Heavyweight Champ, Evander Holyfield, is fighting an exhibition as the co-feature for Triller.
