Ben Shalom delivers honest verdict on Chris Eubank Jr vs Kell Brook: ‘No one could call it’

Kell Brook has not fought since beating his fierce rival Amir Khan in 2022. He has been linked with a comeback since that bout, while Chris Eubank Jr lost in his most recent fight, in a rematch against his fierce rival Conor Benn.

In recent days, Brook confirmed to TalkSport that he was making a comeback, and the rumoured opponent is Chris Eubank Jr, with promoter Ben Shalom giving his honest opinion on the rumoured bout when appearing on TalkSport.

Brook (40-3, 28 KOs) was rumoured to be returning to action in Dubai against Eisa Al Dah, a fight Ricky Hatton was due to take part in before his untimely death. When announcing his comeback, Brook told TalkSport: “I’m coming back, there is big news of a massive fight coming your way.”

“Back in the professional ring, [with a] British Boxing Board of Control [licence], coming out of retirement.

“I can’t give anyone a clue over the opponent, but we won’t be waiting much longer.

“It’ll happen this year, it’s about done. And we will be giving the fans another massive fight.”

When asked who the opponent could be, Brook said: 

“Who knows, who knows?”

“Listen, it could be, who knows? But it is going to be announced soon.

“I’m training seven days a week, I’m on another level again right now.”

In his prime, the Englishman mixed at the highest level against Shawn Porter, Gennadiy Golovkin, and Errol Spence Jr.

Eubank (35-4, 24 KOs), despite never winning a major world title, is one of the sport’s most well-known personalities, due to his outspoken personality and his dad, Chris Eubank Sr. His best wins have come against Conor Benn, Liam Smith and James DeGale.

Eubank’s promotional future had been called into question recently, but Shalom has insisted he remains the promoter for Eubank Jr:

“This fight is by no means definitely happening,” said Ben Shalom when talking on talkSPORT.

“Sometimes you have fighters, where one is past it, and one’s not, or one’s this and one’s that. I think based on Chris’ last performance and based on how good Kell looks, I think there’s certain fights where you know what. No one could call it. It’s a 50/50 fight,” added Shalom.

When asked by Simon Jordan about this fight and the integrity of the sport, Shalom said: “I’m all for the AJ-Fury, and the Brook’s vs Eubank’s and the this and the that, and the circus of Jake Paul, that’s fine. When they’re not pretending they’re world champions, when they’re not creating other belts. When they know what it is. There’s still a place for those guys.

“The elite of the elite operate within the sport. Because there’s still a place for those fights. There’s still a place for those big names. At least they’re not pretending it’s for a world title; that’s where it’s different. That’s where it doesn’t affect the sporting ecosystem in this country.”
