Teofimo Lopez embraces risk ahead of Rolly Romero fight: ‘No risk, no reward’

On August 22, Rolly Romero vs Teofimo Lopez headlines a fight card promoted by TGB Promotions, in association with Takeover Promotions at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Romero’s WBA welterweight title will be on the line. Fight fans can catch the action on DAZN PPV, Ultimate Tier, and Prime Video.

Ahead of this world title bout, Lopez spoke at a media workout in Los Angeles, where he made it clear he’s focused, and the danger in moving up to 147 is not lost on him.

Teofimo Lopez set to challenge Rolly Romero on August 22

Lopez (22-2, 13 KOs) has shone brightly during his career, with eye-catching wins against Vasyl Lomachenko and Josh Taylor. Last time out, he was thoroughly outclassed by Shakur Stevenson. “The Takeover” needs to be fully focused on Rolly, and will be eager to become a three-division world champion on August 22.

Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) will be defending the WBA title for the first time since they elevated him. He hasn’t fought since beating Ryan Garcia on the Times Square card on May 2, 2025. Rolly’s best wins came against Garcia and Manuel Jaimes.

Lopez focused on August 22 challenge

Speaking at the media workout in LA, Lopez said:

“I’m fighting a big puncher at 147 and going up to that weight for the first time. We’re taking a risk, because it’s no risk, no reward. I’m just focusing on my objectives so I can come out victorious.

“Every fight at 147 will be my biggest fight. I won’t say they’ll all be the most challenging. The best man will end up on top. Right now I’m only focused on Rolly Romero.

“I’m trying to make the best fights we can make. Signing with DAZN was a no-brainer. They started with ‘The Takeover’.

“I’m just going to keep going forward in my career. I’m so locked in on continuing to achieve bigger and better things one fight at a time. The fans can decide my legacy when it’s all over.

“I think Rolly’s skills are underappreciated. He controls the pace and makes it his fight, everyone overlooks that. But he’s not underrated on the stature side. He’s a world champion for a reason.”
