On May 30, at the Fertitta Center in Houston, O’Shaquie Foster defeated Raymond Ford by majority decision to retain his WBC super featherweight title. The build-up was spicy, and the fight wasted no time in giving us plenty of drama. After the bout, Foster went back and forth in the ring with Shakur Stevenson and discussed a potential fight with Shakur in the post-fight press conference.
O’Shaquie Foster retains WBC crown against Ray Ford
The build-up to O’Shaquie Foster vs Ray Ford was full of angst and ill-feeling. Both wasted no time once the fight began, with Foster throwing Ford out of the ring in the first round, and somehow avoiding any deductions. Ford showcased his abilities early in the fight with slick movement and sharp punches. Foster (25-3, 12 KOs) was more on the front foot, but Ford (18-2-1, 8 KOs) was impressive with his counters.
It was difficult to call who was in front at the halfway point, but Foster increased the pressure in the second half of the fight, outworking Ford for the majority of the rounds. The fight went to the judge’s scorecards, which read 114-114, 118-110, 116-112, ensuring Foster retained his WBC title.
O’Shaquie Foster calls out Shakur Stevenson
“I told you I was gonna beat your son,” Foster told Stevenson (25-0, 11 KOs), immediately after the fight. Foster and Stevenson went into a back-and-forth in the ring, which showed there’s no love lost between these two, and fuelled talk of a potential bout.
In the post-fight presser, Foster again made it clear who he wants to face next: “Y’all know who I want. It’s all up to Shakur now. He says he’s the man. I told him we can do it at 40. We can do it at 35, whichever one he wants to do. That’s a big fight. We can do it right here in Houston. Toyota Centre or something. I feel like the world wants to see it now. We just gotta wait and see.”
Discussing his feelings about whether Shakur would take the fight, Foster said: “He was talking like he would, but when I was looking at his face, he kind of looked timid. I don’t know if he was doing it for the show or not, but as y’all can see, I’m very serious about making that fight. I told him what I was going to do to his little man (Ray Ford). I feel like the world is going to ask for it now. They feel like he’s the lower version of Shakur, so I showed what I can do to him. Let’s see what Shakur’s gonna do.”
