Raymond Muratalla Finishes Strong to Decision Tevin Farmer

Raymond Muratalla (21-0, 16 KOs) required a strong finish to defeat Tevin Farmer (33-6-1, 8 KOs, 1 NC) in their Saturday night fight.

Scores were 97-92, 96-93 and 95-94, giving Muratalla a unanimous decision victory. With the win, he remains unbeaten and on the path to eventually challenge for a lightweight world title. While he had some struggles with Farmer’s style early in the fight, he finished strong to get the win on the scorecards.

The bout headlined a Top Rank card at the Palms Casino and Resort’s Pearl Theater in Las Vegas, NV. Fight fans in the United States could catch the action live on ESPN+. Those in the United Kingdom and Ireland were able to do so with Sky Sports while TSN+ broadcast the event for those in Canada.

Originally, Janibek Alimkhanuly was to defend his WBO and IBF middleweight titles against Andrei Mikhailovich. The Kazakh had to be hospitalized for dehydration on Thursday evening, causing the fight to be cancelled. As a result, the lightweight clash between Muratalla and Farmer became the new main event.

Fight Recap

Farmer began the bout fighting off of the back foot and was the slightly busier of the two. Muratalla pursued the former world champion and had some success in landing his punches. However, he was unable to cut off the ring, allowing Farmer to box and move for most of the first half of the bout.

As the fight entered its second half, Muratalla became a lot busier. Farmer appeared to tire and was not as elusive as earlier in the bout. In round eight, he lost a point for excessive holding. With more than a minute to go in the tenth, Muratalla landed a looping right hand to the head that visibly stunned his opponent. Farmer was able to stay standing and made it to the final bell.

While Farmer began the fight well, he couldn’t sustain his momentum in the later rounds. Muratalla had some trouble with the elusiveness of his opponent, but he took over after he began letting his hands go from round seven onwards. That, in addition to the point deduction and some busy early rounds, helped him earn the decision.

“I just had to keep applying the pressure,” said Muratalla. “He was moving around. He was holding. So I had to keep putting on the pressure. And we came out with the victory.”

“I was just consistent with the pressure. I just kept putting it on. My team told me to keep putting it on. I was breaking him down round by round.”

“I want the champions next. [Denys] Berinchyk called my name. I’m calling out his name right now. If I can’t get Berinchyk, then I want Shakur [Stevenson].”

“That point deduction was crazy,” said Farmer. “I feel like we were both holding. The times I tried to get out, he had my arm, so it looked like I was holding. So, he took the point. But it’s the ref. He makes the calls. So you have to take it on the chin.”

Undercard Results

Sulaiman Segawa (17-4-1, 6 KOs, 1 NC) won a unanimous decision against Ruben Villa (22-2, 7 KOs). Scores for the 10-round featherweight fight were 98-92, 97-93 and 96-94.

Charlie Sheehy (10-0, 5 KOs) won a unanimous decision against Ricardo Quiroz (13-5, 7 KOs). Scores for the eight-round super lightweight contest were 78-74 and 77-75 (x2).

Art Barrera Jr. (6-0, 4 KOs) won a unanimous decision against Javier Mayoral (6-6-1, 1 KO). Scores for the six-round welterweight fight were 60-52 across the board. Mayoral was down in rounds one and four.

Jonathan López (16-0, 12 KOs) won via first-round knockout against Leonardo Padilla (23-6-1, 16 KOs, 1 NC). The time of stoppage for this eight-round super featherweight clash was 1:43. Padilla was ruled knocked down after he nearly went out of the ring from a left hand to the body. After getting himself out of the ropes, he stayed down for the entire count of referee Allen Huggins.

Albert Gonzalez (9-0, 5 KOs) won via sixth-round technical knockout against Conrado Martinez (9-2, 0 KOs). The time of stoppage for this six-round super featherweight bout was 1:23. Referee Thomas Taylor put an end to proceedings following a barrage of punches from Gonzalez.

Israel Mercado (11-1-1, 7 KOs) won a unanimous decision against Dondrell Haynes (8-2, 7 KOs). Scores for the six-round super lightweight fight were 60-54 and 59-55 (x2).

Opening the broadcast, Javier Zamarron (9-0, 5 KOs) won a unanimous decision against Michael Bracamontes (9-2-1, 5 KOs). Scores for the six-round super featherweight clash were 59-55 across the board.
