With the new year of 2021 here, we get ready for an intriguing Lightweight #1 contender battle in Big D. And for unbeaten California 135 lb. star, Ryan Garcia, his matchup Saturday night is likely the toughest test he’s ever faced.
The WBC had mandated the Garcia-Campbell fight back in early August, while the fighters and their promoters hashed out when and where to fight. They had orginally settled on the date of December 5th before Campbell contracted Covid 19 early in November and had to stop training. Thus, the fight was pushed back to this first Saturday in January.
The 22 year old Garcia is 20-0, 17 KOs, and is considered the star of Golden Boy’s stable now that the nasty breakup of four division World Champ, Canelo Alvarez and Oscar De La Hoya’s promotion is complete. He was last in the ring in a one round, one punch wipeout of Freddy Fonseca in February.
Get great insight into this one from Todd, who’s there for the final pre-fight press conference, the Friday weigh-in and then Saturday evening’s scheduled 12 round main event to determine the brand new WBC #1 Lightweight contender.
The belief is that the winner of this contest will fight WBC World Champ (and another California unbeaten) Devin Haney coming up a little later in 2021.
