Roy Jones Jr. Praises Undefeated Lightweight Star
Roy Jones Jr. is one of the greatest boxers of any generation. His greatness was seen when he put on a boxing clinic against James Toney in 1994 to win the IBF super middleweight title with a brilliant example of how powerful speed and athleticism can be. He enjoyed other memorable moments, defeating John Ruiz and Virgil Hill. When Jones praises another fighter – that’s an indication they have something very special. “Superman” has recently praised current WBA world lightweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis on the All the Smoke Fight podcast.

Gervonta Davis – ‘A Real Chess Player in the Ring’
The lightweight division is one or arguably the most stacked division in boxing with Shakur Stevenson, William Zepeda and Vasyl Lomachenko lighting up the division. One of the most talked about and talented pugilists at lightweight is “Tank” Davis. The Baltimore southpaw has received high praise from Roy Jones: “One of the best ones out there… he’s really one of the pound-for-pound best ones out of the coop,” Jones said.
He continued with host Stephen Jackson and said: “He can punch but he also can box. Some that can punch, can’t box. He can box, he can punch, he can move laterally, he can do it left side, right side.”
Davis once again showed his impressive finishing ability against Frank Martin and the Pensacola native spoke on this finishing ability of “Tank”: “He can do whatever he needs to do as a southpaw to get the job done and that’s saying a lot because not many guys can do that today.”
The Baltimore fighter has shown he possesses a special knockout ability, with 28 wins inside the distance: “He shows discipline… discipline enough to [know] he got enough shock on his punch but he knows how to set the punch up before he does it,” said Jones Jr.
“Superman” elaborated on the impressive ring IQ of Davis: “That’s a real chess player in the boxing ring.”
He added: “[Davis] and Terence Crawford are two of the best right now because of their setup game.”
What’s Next for Davis?
Dan Rafael has recently reported on Davis and Lomachenko opening negotiations for a fascinating unification fight, which looks likely to be the next contest for “Tank” and what a fight this would be.
