Lara is planning a knockout of Alvarez Saturday

At the weigh-in yesterday, Erislandy Lara came in ready to go as he looks to claim the WBA Super Welterweight title in his second time this year against Ramon Alvarez on Saturday night.

While Lara came in at 153.75 pounds, his challenger Alvarez came in at 158.6 pounds and also a half-hour late. This weight issue, of course, means that Lara per the rules can only win the WBA title since the weight limit is 154 for the contest airing as the main event on Fox. This problem, however, hasn’t stopped Lara from saying he’s going to stop Alvarez.

In preparation for Saturday night against Alvarez, Lara said the following:

“Alvarez is about to find out how hard we’ve worked. I think after the sixth round, you will see all the training that I did and the game plan that we have, start to break him down. After that, the knockout is going to come,” Lara said.

“My goal has been to get back to the top of the division. I’ve been at the top of the division all of these years and regaining a title is huge. It’s part of my history and my legacy. I’m super excited to be back in another big fight. I’m just focused on getting my title back. I want to look spectacular in this main event Saturday night on a big stage. Then I can move on to the biggest fights in the world.

“Going back to my original pro coach Ismael Salas has been great. Ronnie Shields is a great trainer, and we had a great run together, I just had to change atmosphere. I’m very comfortable in Las Vegas. The sparring was perfect, and we’re ready to rock. I come well prepared for this fight. The fight with Canelo was a long time ago, so now I’m just looking forward and toward being in bigger fights.”

An overweight Alvarez based on what his camp is claiming was hos own nutritionist messing up his diet doesn’t sound like it’s going to bode well for him in the ring on Saturday as he is facing Lara who is trying to get back in the mix of top fighters at 154. We’ll see if Lara comes thru on his promise.
