Reliving Josh Taylor’s Undisputed Glory

On Saturday, May 22, 2021, Josh Taylor and José Ramírez collided for undisputed glory at the Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, with the fight living up to the undisputed tag and providing plenty of drama as Taylor became undisputed champion, winning by unanimous decision with the judges scorecards reading 114-112 x3. As we are in fight week for Taylor vs. Jack Catterall, it seemed only right – to revisit the most glorious night in the career of “The Tartan Tornado.”

Josh Taylor Defeats José Ramírez for Undisputed Glory

Josh Taylor vs. José Ramírez Recap

Taylor became only the sixth man (at the time) to claim undisputed champion status in the four-belt era. Ramírez outworked his Scottish opponent in the first few rounds as he was first to the punch, forcing the action more than Taylor.

“The Tartan Tornado” had two huge rounds in the middle of the fight. A beautifully timed short left hand dropped the Californian fighter in round six, but in the seventh, the fight was nearly over when the Scotsman landed a vicious uppercut.

The uppercut seemed to take the win out of the American’s sails. Despite recovering, he couldn’t get close enough to Taylor, who boxed well at range for the rest of the fight to get the historic decision win.

What Happened Next?

After the historic win in Vegas, Taylor took on Catterall and escaped with a narrow split decision win in what was a controversial decision in the eyes of many. Following that controversy, “The Tartan Tornado” lost his WBO and The Ring light-welterweight titles against Teofimo Lopez.
