‘I’m Going Up to Lightweight’: Matchroom Boxing Fighter Eyes New Weight Division
Joe Cordina enjoyed a winning 2023, going to war with Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov – reclaiming the IBF super featherweight title. He also went on to retain the strap in a close-fought battle against Edward Vasquez. In an interview with Charlie Parsons at Boxing Social, Cordina spoke about his future aspirations, including – a move up in weight.
In his interview with Boxing Social, Cordina was dismissive of potential fights against fellow Brits Zelfa Barrett and Jordan Gill before expressing his desire for big-money fights. When discussing future plans, Cordina revealed: “I’m only having one more fight at super feather, then I’m going up to lightweight.” When asked about specific opponents, Cordina also revealed his confusion regarding Leigh Wood looking like he is going to rematch Josh Warrington.
When asked about his good friend Craig Richards moving to the McGuigan gym, he joked: “I’m going to be last on all the runs now.” He added: “He’s got to do what’s best for him and his career.”
Charlie Parsons asked Cordina about his thoughts on Jaime Munguia vs John Ryder, and the Welshman said: “Me too,” in response to Parsons declaring he was tipping Ryder to win. On the Conor Benn and Chris Eubank Jr fight falling through, the Welsh fighter expressed his disappointment.
When reflecting on his career and talking about world titles, the Welsh fighter said: “I’ve achieved everything I’ve set out to do.”
