Jesse Rodriguez puts Antonio Vargas on notice: ‘new weight class, same goals’

On June 13, at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Jesse Rodriguez moves up to bantamweight to challenge WBA bantamweight champion Antonio Vargas, live on DAZN.

Rodriguez (23-0, 16 KOs) has reigned supreme at smaller weights and is stepping up to bantamweight with the aim of becoming a three-weight World champion. Rodriguez has already sent a warning to the WBA champion ahead of their fight.

Jesse Rodriguez signs long term extension with Matchroom Boxing

Before the Rodriguez-Vargas confirmation, Matchroom Boxing made the announcement on their social media channels on April 17. It was mentioned in the announcement that it is a long-term deal.

Rodriguez has wowed fans throughout his career, unifying the Flyweight division with a stunning stoppage win over Sunny Edwards. He has also recorded impressive wins over Carlos Cuadras and Juan Francisco Estrada, adding various titles along the way. Since beating Estrada, “Bam” has defeated Pedro Guevara, Phumelele Cafu, and last time out, against WBA super flyweight champion Fernando Martinez.

Vargas (19-1-1 11 KOs) has been elevated to the full champion for the second time, having landed the interim title in December 2024 against Winston Guererro. He was then elevated before defending the title against Daigo Higa in July, with their entertaining fight ending in a draw. He then became champion in recess after a fight with former champion Seiya Tsutsumi was postponed for a third time. The Japanese fighter has now been placed in the same position after being unable to face Vargas at the fourth attempt, with Vargas now elevated once again.

Jesse Rodriguez sends warning to Antonio Vargas

Looking ahead to June 13 and the challenge ahead at bantamweight, Jesse Rodriguez said: “New weight class, same goals – dominate and pick up all the belts.”

“On June 13, I look forward to becoming a three-division World Champion,” added “Bam.”
