Three Key Ways to Win for Galal Yafai vs. Sunny Edwards

On Saturday, November 30 at the bp pulse LIVE, Birmingham, Sunny Edwards (21-1, 4 KOs) will meet Galal Yafai (8-0, 6 KOs) for the vacant WBC interim world flyweight title. It will be the main event of a Matchroom Boxing card shown live on DAZN. As we build up to fight night, Big Fight Weekend look at three ways Yafai can defeat “Showtime.”

Three Key Strategies for Galal Yafai to Defeat Sunny Edwards

Work Rate

The work rate of Yafai will be vital in this fight. When Edwards lost to “Bam” Rodriguez the work rate of the American was a key ingredient – to why he defeated Edwards. He must keep walking Edwards down and making him feel his power. He needs to make that ring as small as possible, like “Bam” did. The Birmingham fighter cannot let Sunny get settled and find his timing and rhythm.

Power

Alongside his work rate, Yafai carries plenty of power, and he will need to use that to ensure Edwards doesn’t get settled. The Birmingham fighter is adept at landing heavy body shots, and if he can land these shots, it will help slow down the movement of Edwards. The work rate and power of “Bam” were vital in overcoming Sunny in their fight – and it is imperative Yafai uses both of these characteristics to defeat Edwards.

Control the Distance

Yafai has an 8-inch reach advantage, which he needs to utilise on Nov. 30. Edwards was peppered throughout by the “Bam” jab, and Yafai needs to implement similar tactics and find a home for that power jab early. The reach advantage could be significant as Yafai can keep Sunny at bay – but also dish out punishment at range when needed. But as mentioned earlier, he also applies plenty of pressure, making him capable of closing the distance when needed.

Sunny has plenty of experience, but the Birmingham native taking this fight for just his ninth professional bout is a testament to just how much he and his team believe he can get the job done. Edwards has plenty in his favour, as does Yafai – and we believe the fighter who implements their game plan first will take all the beating in this fascinating all-British flyweight fight.
