‘We’re making more money’: Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao 2 shifted to different venue

The rematch between Floyd Mayweather (50-0, 27 KOs) and Manny Pacquiao (62-8-3, 39 KOs) will now take place in a different venue than previously announced.

Mike Coppinger of The Ring magazine reported the news on Friday. The two multi-division world champions will now clash on Sept. 25 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV. Netflix will remain the broadcaster.

Mayweather and Pacquiao were originally set to face each other on Sept. 19 at the Sphere in Las Vegas, NV. The changes have been attributed to financial reasons.

“We never wanted this at the Sphere,” said Jas Mathur, CEO of Manny Pacquiao Promotions, to Coppinger in The Ring magazine. “It didn’t make economic sense for this event to be at the Sphere. Ultimately the parties putting the fight together were insistent. Floyd was able to get it out of the Sphere. Bottom line, we’re making more money.”

Mayweather had previously cast doubts on the rematch when he claimed that it would be an exhibition and that its location may not be the Sphere. The Ring magazine claims that documents signed by the American indicate that the bout is a sanctioned professional fight and not an exhibition.

“Well, at this particular time I know everybody is going to ask questions about the Pacquiao fight,” Mayweather said at a press conference for his upcoming exhibition against Mike Zambidis. “Like I said, the sport of boxing has truly changed. We have a lot of new companies, lot of new faces, and Netflix, I truly believe we’ll get this done. We’re almost at the finish line to finish the Pacquiao fight, but a lot of things have changed in the sport of boxing and eventually I think within the next 48 hours the Pacquiao fight should be done.”

In the end, Mayweather and Pacquiao have now agreed to have a professional contest on Sept. 25 at the T-Mobile Arena.
