While Ryad Merhy (32-3, 16 KOs) ensured his clash against Jared Anderson (17-0, 15 KOs) was memorable for the wrong reasons, there was still much learned from the Top Rank event.
The card featured young fighters with plenty of promise, in addition to more experienced boxers showing they possess what it takes to be at the top. Jared Anderson Needs Better Opposition
For some time, Anderson has been called “the next great American heavyweight.” While he has put on impressive performances in the past against the likes of Jerry Forrest, his last two fights have not been the best examples of matchmaking.

Anderson needs opponents who will test him, much like how Charles Martin did. Only then will the tagline “the next great American heavyweight” be justified.
Efe Ajagba Is Putting on Better Performances
In a close bout, Efe Ajagba (20-1, 14 KOs) won a split decision against Guido Vianello (12-2-1, 10 KOs). The fight saw plenty of back and forth from both men, but in the end, two judges saw the Nigerian do the better work. Since losing a unanimous decision to Frank Sánchez just over two years ago, he has won all five fights. The opportunities for Ajagba will only continue to grow with performances like these.
Persistence Pays Off
Early in the card, Alejandro Guerrero (13-4, 10 KOs) won his first bout in over four years. More significantly, it was against Jalen Walker (12-1-1, 10 KOs), a fighter Top Rank had just signed. Guerrero had lost four fights in a row going into April 13. However, he made the most of his opportunity on Saturday night with a seventh-round stoppage of Walker.
Abdullah Mason looks Good So Far
Abdullah Mason (13-0, 11 KOs) is only 20 years old but is already getting attention for his performances. The lightweight boxer has put in some impressive performances and is one to keep an eye on. While he looks like a future star, it is best to tame expectations and let him develop.
Ali Feliz Gets Started
Ali Feliz won his professional debut with a stoppage of Anthony Woodson III (1-2, 1 KO). He is a 20-year-old American heavyweight who just signed with Top Rank. Like Anderson over four years ago, Feliz began his professional career at a young age.
There are a lack of young American heavyweights signed with major promotional companies, making him someone to watch. However, like Mason, it is best to tame expectations and let him develop.
