Fabio Wardley Eyes Major Fights and Talks Homecoming Bout

On Saturday, October 12, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on the undercard of Dmitry Bivol vs. Artur Beterbiev, Fabio Wardley (18-0-1, 17 KOs) and Frazer Clarke (8-1-1, 6 KOs) met once again – and the Ipswich fighter won with a stunning first-round stoppage, in what was the rematch from their memorable all-British classic draw in March this year. The 29-year-old Ipswich native has reflected on the win over Clarke and spoken about the future, including his options for his next fight to Rob Tebbutt on a special podcast of the Boxing Show by Boxing News.

Wardley Talks Potential Opponents and Portman Road Fight

When reflecting on his win over Frazer Clarke, Wardley said: “I had to do it properly. Had to do it in style. Had to make a point. Had to make a statement and I think I did all those things.” 

When asked what’s next and if he wanted to win the British title outright, Wardley was adamant in his response: “I don’t think so, no. I don’t think it’s worth it. I don’t think there’s anything left. I’ve cleaned up the domestic division really,” said Wardley.

Rob Tebbutt then asked Wardley about potential opponents for his next fight with Tebbutt mentioning Deontay Wilder and Agit Kabayel, and Wardley said: “Honestly I don’t know. It’s not about I want to fight you, it’s about who‘s going to set me up to be in the best position.” 

Wardley continued: “Now is the right time to sit  with the likes of Frank and my team and stuff who have been and put people in world title positions.” 

Portman Road Homecoming Fight

The unbeaten heavyweight was then asked about a possible homecoming fight at Portman Road and revealed: “There has been and always has been ongoing conversations between me and the club.” 

Wardley added: “Things are a little bit more solid now I have promotional backing with Frank and Queensberry, who are able to facilitate and put all the nuts and bolts of it together.”

He added: “Especially after that win, it’s a stronger conversation now. It’s a stronger question. So, it is something we’re exploring.” 

The interview finished with Fabio revealing when we will likely see him in the ring next: “Early next year I think,” said the heavy-handed Ipswich fighter.
