Unbeaten Super Lightweight Sensation Joins Matchroom Boxing: Fight News Incoming

Eddie Hearn continues to add to his impressive stable, with Shakur Stevenson recently joining the Matchroom team. Their involvement with Turki Alalshikh and Riyadh Season makes them an even more attractive option to fighters than before. Via the Matchroom X account, it was announced that undefeated super lightweight sensation Ernesto Mercado (16-0, 15 KOs) is the latest signing for Hearn’s team.

The dangerous Californian Mercado is tipped for big things, with the Matchroom reveal stating: “Fight news incoming for Tito Big things coming!” The super lightweight sensation has slick footwork, and plenty of power, which allows him to get in and out of range when needed and throw his shots with plenty of spite.

He shows patience in his work, using his jab to great effect before following up with the big right hand. He is also adept at working the body. Throwing his jab effectively forces his opponents to adopt a high guard which allows the Upland native to swing in vicious body shots.

Career Highlights

Mercado is extremely accurate with his combinations, wasting very little, which has seen him stop all but one of his opponents. The only fighter to hear the final bell – was the experienced South African Xolisani Ndongeni. Despite going the distance, “Tito” was dominant throughout.

He boxed diligently against his more experienced opponent, working behind an effective jab and throwing the right hand. Despite not hurting Ndongeni, the South African often looked to survive rather than engage.

Other notable wins throughout his career came in the first-round KO win over Hank Lundy, who went the distance with Jose Zepeda. His most recent victory saw him beat up Hector Edgardo Sarmiento before the corner of Sarmiento pulled him out after the third round.
