De La Hoya Interested In Making Benavidez-Munguia

Promoter Oscar De La Hoya is prepared to discuss a potential bout between Jaime Munguia (42-0, 33 KOs) and David Benavidez (27-0, 23 KOs). On Monday evening, he posted a tweet on Twitter claiming that Munguia himself is interested in making the fight happen.

Benavidez was last seen winning a unanimous decision against former super middleweight world champion Caleb Plant in March. The fight headlined a card at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. For 12 rounds, Benavidez outworked and overwhelmed Plant. Judges scored the fight 115-113, 116-112, 117-111.

Recently, Munguia won a close unanimous decision against Sergiy Derevyanchenko. The two headlined an event at the Toyota Arena in Ontario, California, USA. In an entertaining bout from start to finish, Munguia dropped Derevyanchenko in the final round with a shot to the body. The final scorecards read 114-113 (x2) and 115-112.

Munguia is co-promoted De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions and Zanfer Boxing. On the other hand, Benavidez is promoted by Sampson Lewkowicz. Publicly, however, Munguia has not confirmed his interest in fighting Benavidez. As of yet, no dialogue has taken place to make the fight happen. De La Hoya and Benavidez have expressed an interest in making this happen. Despite this, it may some time before fight fans see Munguia and Benavidez in the ring.

Following Berlanga’s win over Jason Quigley on June 24, some expected Munguia to face him later this year given that both fight on the same outlet, DAZN. Promoter Eddie Hearn also expressed interest in making the fight. Despite this, it appears De La Hoya is more interested in making Benavidez-Munguia.

Although Canelo is undisputed at super middleweight, a number of intriguing matchups at the weight class are possible. Fight fans can look forward to these matchups in the coming months and years.
