Conroy on Tourney: “What’s best for everyone’s safety”
Golden Contract light heavyweight semi-finalist Liam Conroy supports the postponement of Friday’s event despite enjoying a hugely productive camp.
Barrow-in-Furness’ shipyard hero (18-5-1, 9 KOs) blasted his way into the final four and had been set to take another step towards stardom at York Hall on Friday night – only for the coronavirus pandemic to force the show to be put off.

Conroy said afterwards: “I found out when we were waiting for our lift to the draw and I’m gutted about it but it’s for the health of the public. If that’s what’s best for everyone’s safety then it has to be reorganised for another time.
“I’m gutted I won’t be able to make good use of that really good camp I’ve just had but it’s just one of those things. You’ve got to look at it like that.
“To be fair, I’m lucky in that I’ve got a day job. Some of these lads aren’t getting paid and might not get paid until they box again. I’m in a position to go back to work and start getting paid straight away if everything’s okay up in Barrow.
“I’ll ease back and have a few days off. I’ll go up in weight a little bit but I’ll keep ticking over. I want to make the most of being so fit. I’ll keep doing my running and look out for a new date to build back up towards.
“Some things are more important than boxing. This isn’t the be all and end all. I feel sorry for people who’ve booked trains and hotels to come down and watch me. I’m sure they’ll understand the situation.
“I hope everyone comes through this situation alright and everything is back to normal before too long.”
