‘If I Was a Betting Man’: Bob Arum Talks Tyson Fury Future

Tyson Fury announced his retirement from professional boxing on January 13, 2025, via his personal  Instagram. It wasn’t the first time we have seen a retirement message from “The Gypsy King” and many reacted negatively and predicted we see Fury back in the ring again. Speculation has risen again regarding a potential all-British superfight with Anthony Joshua. Top Rank chairman Bob Arum has revealed his thoughts on the 5 Live Boxing show on whether we will see Fury fight again.

Tyson Fury’s Desire

When talking to Steve Bunce, Arum discussed the retirement of Tyson Fury and a rumoured return: “If I was a betting man I would say he will never fight again,” said Arum.

Arum added: “Marvin Hagler had an expression – ‘a rich guy who goes to bed wearing silk pyjamas doesn’t get up in the morning to do road work’.”

Discussing desire and doing the hard work, Arum interestingly said: “Tyson, really, I don’t think wants to get up in the morning and do road work and go through the experience of having to train when economically he doesn’t have to do it any more.”

Is Tyson Fury Staying Retired?

Frank Warren had a huge part to play in the career of Tyson Fury and spoke to TNT Sports at the time of Fury’s retirement announcement: “God bless him. If that’s what he wants to do, that’s what he should do,” Warren told TNT Sports. “I’ve said it all along: No one should be trying to influence him in the boxing world, what he should do. It’s up to him at the end of the day, after consulting his family and making discussions. He’s made a lot of money. He’s had a fantastic career. He’s the best British heavyweight, probably joint best of his division, worst case, of this century.”

“He’s been in some magnificent fights. He’s shown what he’s been about. He’s been exciting to be around him. I’ve loved every minute of it and I hope all the fans have as well. (He should) go and enjoy himself.”

“And I hope he doesn’t leave boxing. I’d like him to come and work in boxing. He’s been brilliant for British and world boxing, and I wish him a lovely retirement and to enjoy his life.”

Tim will tell if we see “The Gypsy King” back in the ring, but whether we do or not, his legacy is guaranteed as one of the most entertaining heavyweights of all time, regardless of the back-back defeats against Oleksandr Usyk.
