Amanda Serrano Injured- Katie Taylor Rematch Off

Tuesday morning saw bad news delivered on one of the most anticipated women’s title rematches, maybe, ever. This, as Matchroom Boxing announced that newly crowned undisputed featherweight champ Amanda Serrano has suffered an injury and her battle with undisputed 135 lb. champ Katie Taylor of Ireland for May is now off.

Matchroom gave the update on their social outlets and their website mid-day London time:

“Due to an injury sustained by Amanda Serrano, Matchroom Boxing and Most Valuable Promotions regret to announce that the Taylor-Serrano II bout on May 20 in Dublin will not go ahead as planned.

“The teams are in discussions about finding a revised date for the bout. Futher details will follow in due course,” the statement read.

Serrano was in the ring earlier this month, headlining for Matchroom in a main event at Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater. That night Serrano retained her WBO, WBA and IBF titles and took Erika Cruz’s WBC belt in a bloody slugfest decision.

The 34 year old Serrano, 44-2-1, 30 KOs, is Puerto Rico-born and but has fought repeatedly in her career out of NYC.

That included a tremendous battle with the unbeaten former Olympic Gold Medalist for Ireland, Taylor in a sold out Madison Square Garden main arena.. The two traded huge punches, including in the final two rounds, as the bout was one of the top fights, male or female, of 2022. And, because of the stakes and the action, it’s being viewed as one of the most significant women’s bouts ever.

In the end Taylor got her hand raised on a narrow split decision to retain her lightweight titles. She was ringside for Serrano’s victory February 4th and immediately after the fight joined Serrano in the ring, where Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn confirmed the rematch would be on for May 20th in Taylor’s homeland.

Now, we await what the injury for Serrano is and how long it will sideline her prior to re-scheduling the Taylor rematch.
