Alycia Baumgardner Failed Pre-Fight PED Test In July

Undisputed women’s super featherweight champion Alycia Baumgardner is embroiled in a controversy. This, after a report from our Insider Dan Rafael on Wednesday afternoon that Baumgardner tested positive for a banned substance prior to her latest title defense back in July.

Rafael broke the news on social media citing multiple sources, including acquiring a copy of the positive test, that Baumgardner had tested positive for the steroid Mesterolone

Even more damning was that the positive test found by Drug Free Sport was administered a full three days prior to Baumgardner defending her titles in an eventual decision win over Christine Linardatou. That bout was headlining the Matchroom Boxing main event  in Detroit on July 15th. Further, the positive test results were only returned, according to Rafael, on August the 10th, a full four weeks after the title fight.

Here’s the definition of what Mesterolone does according to the National Institute of Health,

“Mesterolone is a synthetic anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) and derivative of dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It is inactivated by 3α-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase in skeleta muscules so it is considered a weak androgen. It is not a substrate for aromatase so it is not converted into estrogen.”

Essentially, the drug in” layman’s terms” is a muscle building enhancer.

Baumgardner, 15-1, 7 KOs, has been on the ascent for the last couple of years, including her upset win over Mikaela Mayer to become unified  130 lb. world champ in October of 2022.

A unanimous decision vicotry over Elhem Mekhaled in New York back in February gave Baumgarnder all four super featherweight championships.

Baumgardner was most recently seen on DAZN pay-per-view broadcast of the Jake Paul vs. Nate Diaz card, which included undisputed featherweight champion Amanda Serrano successfully defending her four titles in the co-feature. Baumgartner said on the broadcast that she hoped to maybe fight Serrano in an “undisputed vs. undisputed” battle sometime soon.

Now, clearly her championship reign is likely over due to the drug test.

Later Wednesday afternoon, Matchroom Boxing released a statement acknowledging the positive test for Baumgardner,
