Beterbiev and Gvodzyk get ready for huge Friday night clash

Friday night in Philadelphia, history will be made as two unbeaten light-heavyweight World Champs will square off against each other in a title unification fight. That’s when Russian Artur Beterbiev will take on Ukrainian Oleksandr Gvodzyk in a scheduled 12-rounder for the WBC/IBF belts.

And, we went in depth on this fight and many other subjects on the most recent edition of the Big Fight Weekend podcast.

First up, England’s David Payne, aka “The Boxing Writer” from the U.K., jumped on the show to talk about last weekend’s heavyweight debut victory by cruiserweight world champion, Oleksandr Usyk. Payne and I also discussed Tyson Fury and his upcoming professional wrestling debut on a WWE pay-per-view.

And, we also looked ahead to next weekend’s humongous buy card at London’s O2 Arena that includes the junior welterweight unification showdown between Regis Prograis and Scotland’s Josh Taylor, as the main event. The co-feature will have English heavyweight Contender Dereck Chisora battling fellow England heavyweight bomber David Price.

Then on the podcast, we turned our attention to Friday night’s showdown between the unbeaten Light-Heavyweights. This as, senior writer of BigFightWeekend.com, Marquis Johns, joined me along with Tom Marriott of “The Corner Guys Boxing Podcast,”

We break down the matchup and who might get the upper hand in this very evenly matched World Title Fight. Beterbiew has scored 14 Knockouts in all 14 of his fights. Meanwhile, Gvodzyk is also unbeaten at 17 – 0 with 14 knockouts.

Beterbiev was a two-time Olympian for Russia, while Gvodzyk was the 2012 bronze medal winner for Ukraine.

It’s also believed that the winner of this fight cooking into the picture for a possible huge World title Showdown with either WBA Champion Dmitry Bivol, who won easily on last week’s Matchroom Boxing card in Chicago or end up fighting Sergey Kovalev in 2020.

Kovalev obviously will have his hands full with Middleweight Champion, Canelo Alvarez moving up to fight him on November 2nd.

One thing it’s not a dispute is: that the Russians and a Ukrainian are currently in charge of the light heavyweight division.
