Jaron Ennis vs Sebastian Fundora: Xander Zayas and Jaron Ennis face off at their press conference

On June 27, at the Barclays Center, Brooklyn, Xander Zayas vs Jaron Ennis headlined a Matchroom Boxing card in association with Top Rank for Zayas’ WBO/WBA super welterweight title. It was a career-best performance from Ennis, stopping Zayas in the seventh round on DAZN PPV. Mike Coppinger of The Ring Magazine recently revealed that talks are ongoing for Jaron Ennis to face WBC champion Sebastian Fundora in a huge 3-belt unification clash. These rumours have been dismissed by Dan Rafael, who addressed the rumours as “fake news per PBC and Sampson.”

Jaron Ennis defeats Xander Zayas to become unified champion

Ennis (36-0, 32 KOs) produced a career-best performance in Brooklyn, stopping Zayas in round number seven. He quickly found his groove, finding a regular home for the left hand, scoring a knockdown in the first round.

Zayas seemingly found a way back into the fight in the third round, landing two big right hands, which seemingly stunned Ennis. “Boots” quickly found his feet again and began to assert his dominance against a brave Zayas (23-1, 13 KOs).

The fifth round saw Ennis deliver a vicious beatdown on Zayas, scoring another knockdown, thanks to a huge uppercut. For the rest of the fifth, Ennis teed off on Zayas, and somehow the Puerto Rican fighter survived to see the bell.

The end was nigh, and it came in round seven, when Ennis increased the tempo, and floored Zayas once again, prompting his corner to pull their man out, crowning Jaron Ennis the new unified WBO/WBA super welterweight champion.

Dan Rafael clarifies Ennis vs Fundora rumours

Via his X account, Dan Rafael revealed the Jaron Ennis vs Sebastian Fundora (24-1-1, 16 KOs) rumours were fake news as per Premier Boxing Champions and Sampson Lewkowicz, Sebastian Fundora’s long-time promoter.

Coppinger initially revealed talks were ongoing for a fight in November/December, but these rumours have been dismissed:

“Sebastian Fundora will comply with the WBC and face his No. 1 mandatory next,” said Lewkowicz. “A fight with Ennis could happen, but sometime next year.”

The mandatory for Fundora’s WBC super welterweight crown is Ermal Hadribeaj (23-0-1, 8 KOs).

Ennis vs Fundora won’t be next, but we could see a huge unification or undisputed fight next year between the two.
