On July 4, at the Wolstein Centre in Cleveland, Ohio, Bruce Carrington defends his WBC featherweight world title against Rene Palacios. “Shu Shu” won the title against Carlos Castro, winning by ninth-round KO. Ahead of his first defence, Carrington spoke to The Ring, revealing the “big crescendo” fight being planned for him.

Carrington (17-0, 10 KOs) won the title against Castro, and before that, had won three consecutive fights comfortably since his close, majority decision win against Sulaiman Segawa.

Palacios (19-0-1, 10 KOs) has won eight in a row since drawing with Israel Gasparrillo, the only blemish on his professional record. His best win came against Segawa.

Carrington names one fighter for planned ‘big crescendo’

Carrington’s win on January 31 was his most impressive performance to date. The featherweight division has plenty of potential big fights, with Rafael Espinoza (WBO), Brandon Figueroa (WBA), and Angelo Leo (IBF) the other champions.

“If I’m being honest, it looks like the way they’re planning it out is for me and Espinoza to meet at the end,” Carrington told The Ring when discussing possible fights. “That’s what it looks like, for it to be like a big crescendo, me and him having this dream fight. I think that’s what they’re trying to set up, so I’m totally not mad at that.”

A showdown with Espinoza makes the most sense, with both promoted by Top Rank.

Discussing other possible unification fights, Carrington said:

“I feel like Figueroa is one of those guys [who wants difficult fights],” Carrington said, “and I think I’ve seen some interest from Leo, who wouldn’t mind getting in the ring with me as well. So, I have hope. It’s just about getting all the logistics right, money and everything right at this point because this is a business at the end of the day. So, yeah, when the time comes for the fight to be made, I’m gonna do the best job possible to make it happen.”
