Bilal Fawaz vs Ryan Kelly

In the chief support, it was Bilal Fawaz (12-1-1, 3 KOs) defending his British and Commonwealth super welterweight titles against Ryan Kelly (20-7-1, 8 KOs).

It was a relatively cagey opening two rounds, with Kelly edging them on work rate. Fawaz came out in the third round and started to put his shots together, but Kelly quickly fought back. The fourth round was a big one for the current champion, throwing an impressive volume of punches, with Kelly looking hurt by some of those punches.

Fawaz had Kelly hurt in the fifth round with a right hand and threw a huge volume of punches, but nothing with weight to force the stoppage. Kelly covered up and turned the tables later in the round, finding a regular home for his right hand. A relatively even sixth round saw Fawaz end it well on top, landing a series of combinations that hurt Kelly, who did well to stay on his feet.

Over the next few rounds, Fawaz began to control the distance and tempo, with Kelly only having limited success in spurts. The champion looked in his groove during the ninth round, making Kelly miss, and showboating for most of the three minutes.

As a weary Kelly made it back to his corner at the end of the ninth round, the fight was waved off by Kelly’s corner, meaning Fawaz retained his titles by TKO. What’s next for this brilliant fairytale story?

Tiah Mai Ayton vs Stevi Levy

Up next on the Conah Walker vs Sam Eggington undercard was the highly talented Tiah Mai Ayton (6-0, 5 KOs) vs Stevi Levy (15-5, 2 KOs) in the featherweight division.

It was a confident start from Ayton, who showcased impressive variety in her work, while landing some hurtful punches near the bell. Ayton enjoyed plenty of success in the second round, showing plenty of hand speed and hurting Levy again, this time at the end of the second. Ayton went through the gears in the fourth, landing a big uppercut, and followed up with a series of hurtful, accurate punches, resulting in Levy’s corner throwing in the towel. An impressive TKO for “The Star Girl,” but it still feels like there’s plenty more to come, which is a scary prospect for women’s boxing.

Harley Burrows vs Lewis Howells

Next up in the middleweight division, it was Harley Burrows (1-0, 0 KOs) making his professional debut against Lewis Howells (3-8, 0 KOs).

Burrows made an eager start in the opening round and appeared to be trying to force the pace too much. The debutant made some great adjustments and started the second round impressively, mixing his shots well, before landing a big body shot, flooring Howells, who somehow made it to his feet and survived the round.

Howells showed bravery during the third, but Burrows continued to impress with his variety. Burrows continued to dominate, and after the slow start, he showed clear promise on his professional debut and deserved the 40-35 win.

Shannon Ryan vs Nicola Hopewell

In the opening fight on the Conah Walker vs Sam Eggington main card, it was Shannon Ryan (11-1, 2 KO) vs Nicola Hopewell (8-2, 1 KO), for Ryan’s IBF inter-continental title, and the vacant Commonwealth super flyweight title.

Ryan started brightly, taking the centre of the ring, landing a couple of heavy-looking right hands. The fast start from Ryan continued in the second round, landing some smart body shots, before a big right hand floored Hopewell, with her corner seeing enough and throwing in the towel. That was a career-best performance from Ryan, who has added the Commonwealth belt to her IBF inter-continental title. A second-round TKO win.
