Title Fights From Around the World: Thanongsak Simsri scores quick stoppage

Thanongsak Simsri scores quick stoppage over Sergio Mendoza

Thanongsak Simsri (40-1, 35 KOs) needed just two rounds to score a knockout against Sergio Mendoza (27-1, 23 KOs).

The official time of stoppage was 2:32. Simsri remains the IBF light flyweight world champion with the victory. He won the title last year with a win over Cristian Araneta. This was Simsri’s first defence.

Simsri-Mendoza headlined an April 13 Ohashi Promotions card at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan. Fight fans in Japan could catch the action live on Lemino. Those in Latin America were able to do so with ESPN KnockOut.

Both men spent much of the opening round at range of each other. A right hook to the head briefly wobbled Simsri in round two. Unfortunately for Mendoza, the fight would end not long after he had that bit of success.

Simsri scored his first knockdown of the bout with two chopping right hands followed by a left uppercut in round two. Mendoza got up, but was knocked down again by a right hook to the head not long after. He struggled to get to his feet and did not beat the count of referee Koji Tanaka, giving Simsri the knockout victory.
