Sebastian Fundora vs Keith Thurman: Teddy Atlas makes his pick

On March 28, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Sebastian Fundora vs Keith Thurman headlines a Premier Boxing Champions Pay-Per-View event, promoted by TGB Promotions and Sampson Boxing. Fundora’s WBC super-welterweight world title will be on the line.

This fight was originally scheduled for last October, but a hand injury to Fundora led to the fight being postponed. Ahead of this world title clash, renowned boxing trainer Teddy Atlas has revealed his pick via The Ropes.

Fundora (23-1-1, 15 KOs) was last in action when he stopped Tim Tszyu, with Tszyu retiring after round seven. That win ensured Fundora remained among the best in the super welterweight division.

Thurman (31-1, 23 KOs) has beaten elite fighters during his career, with notable wins against Danny Garcia and Shawn Porter. Thurman’s career has stalled in recent years due to injuries and inactivity, but “One Time” did return against Brock Jarvis last March, winning by third-round TKO. It remains to be seen just how much Thurman has left.

Discussing the fighting style of Fundora, Atlas wrote: “Main punch that starts & sets up everything for him is his long and relentless jab and the pressure he brings behind it to wear you down but at times he will get close because he has a true fighters attitude and he will fight with you inside and can be very effective there with his uppercut and hook to the body but he will also stand up straight as he comes in close and give you a big and clean target to catch him!”

On Thurman, Atlas wrote: “Technically solid. Naturally smaller but more physical. Uses jab and legs but looks to be in front, moving laterally at times. Goes to the body. Covers well. Will fight in spurts. Defensively solid. Moves his head and changes range & will put the earmuffs on in spots where it allows the opponent to put combinations together.”

Making his pick for the fight, Atlas mentioned Thurman’s desire and how this will be a key part of the fight. Despite the experience of “One Time,” Atlas concluded: “The money should be on Fundora to ultimately prevail.”
