Mario Barrios vs. Ryan Garcia fight recap
Ryan Garcia (25-2, 20 KOs, 1 NC) had a dominant showing in a unanimous decision win against Mario Barrios (29-3-2, 18 KOs).
Scores were 120-107, 119-108, and 118-109. Garcia is now the WBC welterweight world champion with the victory. This is his first time winning a world title.
Garcia landed an overhand right that rocked Barrios almost immediately after the fight began. A second overhand right sent the reigning champion to the canvas after only 30 seconds had elapsed since the first bell. Garcia immediately established himself as the quicker of the two. Barrios was comparatively slow and struggled to land much of significance.
Garcia mainly worked off of the back foot and consistently threw the jab. It allowed him to set up and land quick right hands to the head, particularly in the fifth where he stunned Barrios. Garcia was winning every round against an opponent with nowhere near the same punch output. Despite dominating, he never came close to getting the stoppage. Garcia’s father (who is also his trainer) revealed in round nine that “King Ry” had hurt his hand and was not using it as much as they had intended to use it.
Barrios never appeared to show any urgency despite being clearly behind on the scorecards. Garcia, even when he was not being particularly active, continued to outbox him till the final bell. Although two judges scored the contest 119-108 and 118-109, it is hard to see where Barrios won any rounds.
Gary Antuanne Russell vs. Andy Hiraoka fight recap
Gary Antuanne Russell (19-1, 17 KOs) overcame the body work of Andy Hiraoka (24-1, 19 KOs) to win a unanimous decision.
There was not a lot of action in the early rounds with both men mainly staying at range of each other. Russell did the better work for the most part, but was prevented from landing punishing shots by an opponent who maintained his distance. Hiraoka began going to the body around the halfway point of the fight, something that helped him start to win rounds.
Russell was repeatedly hit with body shots till the end of the bout. Despite that, he was able to stay standing and return power shots of his own. Hiraoka was given a stern warning in round 10 for a low blow. He was then deducted a point later in the round for an egregious punch below the beltline. Hiraoka’s body work in the second half of the contest definitely narrowed the gap on the scorecards. However, the point deduction and Russell’s work in the earlier rounds helped him seal the win in the end.
