‘Zurdo’ Ramirez addresses Jai Opetaia fight and questions the Aussie’s fight record

The cruiserweight division could enjoy a memorable 2026, with rumours of Gilberto Ramirez facing David Benavidez. Jai Opetaia will make his Zuffa Boxing debut on March 8 against Brandon Glanton. The WBO champion, Noel Mikaelian, could also be involved in some intriguing fights. Boxing fans will be hoping to see all the champions face each other in unification bouts.

Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez has spoken to Fight Hub TV and addressed a potential fight against Opetaia, while dismissing the Aussie’s resume.

Gilberto Ramirez set to face David Benavidez despite lay-off

Gilberto Ramirez (48-1, 30 KOs) was last seen in action, defeating Yuniel Dorticos. That made it four consecutive wins for the Mexican since his loss to Dmitry Bivol. The strongest rumour in the cruiserweight division is that Ramirez will face David Benavidez (31-0, 25 KOs) on May 2 in Las Vegas. 

Jai Opetaia (29-0, 23 KOs) will return to action on March 8 to make his Zuffa Boxing debut against Brandon Glanton (21-3, 18 KOs), with the IBF, The Ring, and Zuffa cruiserweight titles up for grabs.

Ramirez addresses Jai Opetaia fight and resume

When asked why the Opetaia fight has not happened yet, Ramirez said: “I think it will happen eventually. People wanna see that fight. He just signed with another promoter in Zuffa, and they just recognise The Ring Magazine belt. It’s a chance to fight there too.”

“Zurdo” was also asked if he was worried by Opetaia signing with Zuffa if that would stop them potentially fighting in a unification or undisputed bout: “No, I’m not worried. But I mean, the fight will happen, for sure.”

Ramirez was then asked why Jai Opetaia is not the best cruiserweight in the world: “Because ‘Zurdo’ is there,” said the Mexican with confidence. “I’m the best cruiserweight champion. I mean, he’s been doing well in his whole career. He’s been fighting for a long time in this division, but I think he needs to be fighting with different guys, better guys,” added Ramirez regarding Opetaia’s resume.
