‘He’s got a great shot!’ – George Groves backs British star to seize a world title

Hamzah Sheeraz went into 2025 having recorded three impressive wins in 2024, with many tipping the Brit fighter for the top of the middleweight division. A move to super middleweight followed, with Sheeraz impressing and setting himself up for a huge 12 months.

Former super middleweight world champion George Groves recently spoke to BetIdeas and tipped Hamzah Sheeraz for a big 2026.

Hamzah Sheeraz moves from middleweight to super middleweight

Sheeraz (22-0-1, 18 KOs) faced Carlos Adames on February 22, 2025, with many tipping him to win the WBC middleweight title. The British fighter was largely out-fought, with Adames winning many of the exchanges up close. The Judges’ scorecards read 115-114 for Sheeraz, 118-110 for Adames, 114-114, declaring the bout a split draw. Many felt Sheeraz lost the fight. Following the draw in Riyadh, Sheeraz announced he was moving to super middleweight.

The Slough native then faced Edgar Berlanga on the Ring III fight card at the Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens. He dominated the American, scoring two knockdowns, before Sheeraz got the stoppage in the fifth round. Sheeraz has been linked with big fights, and the WBO recently ordered the Slough fighter to face Diego Pacheco (25-0, 18 KOs) for their vacant title.

George Groves tips Hamzah Sheeraz for a big 2026

Discussing Hamzah Sheeraz’s opportunity to win a world title, Groves said:

“Hamzah Sheeraz, now campaigning at a super-middleweight with the belts scattering, I believe he’s got a great shot to win one. He had a great win against Edgar Berlanga. If that fight was happening this year, that might have been happening for a vacant world title.

“He had a fight with Adames but he didn’t really perform. And then we were like, okay, has he not performed or are we about to find his level? Boxing’s brutal like that. Boxing fans are weird. We’re quick to stick the knife in. I think maybe he was a bit tight with the weight now. But at middleweight, I’d like to see him with a shot.”

Who should Sheeraz face next? Is Pacheco the right option for the Queensberry Promotions fighter?
