Dalton Smith claims first world title with stoppage of Subriel Matías

Dalton Smith (19-0, 14 KOs) became a world champion with a fifth round technical knockout of Subriel Matías (23-3, 22 KOs).

The official time of stoppage was 2:24. Smith is now the WBC super lightweight champion with the victory. This was his first time challenging for a world title.

The bout headlined a Fresh Productions card at the Barclays Center in New York City, NY. Fight fans in select countries can catch the action live as a pay-per-view (PPV) with PPV.com.

Dalton Smith stops Subriel Matías in five rounds

Smith started the fight by boxing on the outside. However, by round three he was standing in front of Matías and choosing to exchange from that range. This approach allowed the Puerto Rican to gain the upper hand. Smith was sporting a cut by his left eye (the result of an accidental head clash) by the end of round four. Things would soon get a lot better for the man from Sheffield.

Smith landed back-to-back one-twos upstairs that wobbled his opponent with under a minute to go in the fifth. That was followed up with an overhand right to the head that dropped Matías to the canvas. Although he got up, the referee deemed him to be in no position to continue and terminated the count. That allowed Smith to walk away as the new WBC super lightweight world champion.
