Following an entertaining undercard, it was time for Diego Pacheco vs Kevin Lele Sadjo as they squared off for the WBC Silver and WBO International super middleweight titles.
Pacheco (25-0, 18 KOs) started the brighter, controlling the distance well with his reach advantage. The American continued to control the tempo as the fight reached the midway point. Sadjo (26-1, 23 KOs) landed three successive punches in the sixth, which Pacheco took well.
Despite Sadjo having success, nothing appeared to trouble Pacheco. However, Sadjo showed his power in the eighth round, scoring a knockdown, punishing the lazy movement from Pacheco, which had seeped in during the last few rounds. As the fight reached the championship rounds, Sadjo appeared the fresher.
The Cameroonian fighter let his hands go in the tenth, leaving Pacheco desperate to hold on to Sadjo. Pacheco fought disciplined in the first half of the fight, working diligently behind his jab, before his opponent dragged him into a messy firefight.
Despite the increased pressure, Pacheco continued to show impressive accuracy. A short right hand from Pacheco seemed to hurt Sadjo. The American followed up with some nice combinations, with Sadjo unable to fire back with anything significant.
It was a gutsy effort from the Cameroonian-born fighter, but the more accurate, thoughtful punches came from Pacheco, who recovered well after the knockdown.
The fight went to the judges’ scorecards, which read 117-110, 116-11, and 115-112, all in favour of the 24-year-old Renton fighter. Despite some tough moments, Pacheco deserved the win and will have learned a lot from this bout. He will be relieved to have gotten through this tough fight, but more is needed to challenge for a world title. But Pacheco is now the WBC Silver and WBO International super middleweight champion.
Joe Cordina vs Gabriel Flores
In the penultimate fight of the evening, Joe Cordina (19-1, 9 KOs) faced Gabriel Flores (27-3, 8 KOs) for the WBO international lightweight title.
It was a bright start from the Welshman, landing some hurtful body shots, mixing his punches well. Flores had his moments, but the opening three minutes belonged to Cordina. The sharp variations continued to come from the Welsh fighter, while Flores had his moments, but they were fleeting in the first half of the fight.
The more impactful shots came from the Welshman. In the sixth round, after multiple warnings, Cordina was deducted a point. Flores had his best moment in the seventh round, buckling the knees of his opponent.
It was a strong tenth round from Cordina, seemingly hurting Flores with several shots, who appeared to be tiring at that point. A huge right hand from Cordina in the eleventh had the Stockton native in all kinds of trouble. The Welshman picked his punches well after, and Flores did well to survive the round.
Cordina continued to apply relentless pressure and showcase impressive accuracy until the final bell. The judges’ scorecards read 117-110, 115-112, 114-113, all in favour of Cordina, the new WBO international title holder.
Ernesto Mercado vs Antonio Moran
Ernesto Mercado (18-0, 17 KOs) vs Antonio Moran (31-8-1, 21 KOs) were up next in the super lightweight division. The WBO international title was up for grabs.
It was a dream opening round from Mercado as he got into his groove quickly and landed a huge right hand, knocking Moran down. The Mexican did well to make it to his feet and survive the round.
Moran showed his bravery over the next few rounds, but the powerful body punching from Mercardo ensured he controlled the fight.
The sixth round saw Mercado land a big left hand, which he followed up with a flurry to score another knockdown. Despite making it to his feet, the end was near for the tough Mexican. The fight was over when Mercado landed a huge right hand, leading the referee to wave the fight off. He was too big and too accurate for Moran. A huge sixth-round KO win for Ernesto Mercardo.
Skye Nicolson vs Yuliahn Luna Avila
The first fight on the main undercard of Diego Pacheco vs Kevin Lele Sadjo saw Skye Nicolson 15-1, 3 KOs) face Yuliahn Luna Avila (28-5-1, 4 KOs) for the WBC interim super bantamweight belt.
It was a good start from Nicolson, who moved well and picked her punches effectively, with Avila unable to close the distance early on. Nicolson’s counter punches were effective early on as Avila rushed in.
Nicolson continued to control the tempo of the fight, negating the strengths of Avila with her slick footwork and accurate punching. The check hook from Nicolson landed regularly throughout the fight. The Australian was in control since the first round, superior in every department to her opponent. The judges’ scorecards read 98-92 x2 and 97-93 in favour of Nicolson.
Arturo Cardenas vs Cesar Vaca
Next up for the WBC continental Americas super bantamweight title was Arturo Cardenas (17-0-1, 9 KOs) vs Cesar Vaca (19-3-1, 12 KOs).
Both started well, showcasing fast hand speed. Vaca enjoyed a strong second round before both planted their feet and landed heavy shots at the end of the round. The end of the fourth round saw both fighters exchange bombs once again. As the rounds progressed, Cardenas began to get the better of the exchanges, using his jab effectively.
A straight right hand from Cardenas in the seventh round stunned Vaca, who fell back, suffering a knockdown. The entertaining fight went to the judges’ scorecards, who scored the bout 98-91 x2 and 97-92, ensuring Cardenas retained his WBC Continental Americas super bantamweight title. It was a deserved win for Cardenas who overcame a tough start to win many of the exchanges with Vaca.
Chev Clarke vs Anthony Holloway
Next up in the cruiserweight division saw the return of Chev Clarke (11-2, 8 KOs), who faced American fighter Anthony Hollaway (9-10-3, 7 KOs).
After a cagey start to the fight, Holloway stunned Clarke at the end of the second round, leaving the Brit on unsteady legs as the bell saved him. Clarke adjusted well in the third, closing the distance.
A strong fourth round from Clarke saw him do his best work up close, with Hollaway looking exhausted. At the end of the fourth round, the referee waved the fight off after consulting with Hollaway’s corner, who needed medical treatment after the fight. Clarke was awarded the fourth-round KO victory.
Sachery Sam vs Brandon Medina Guerrero
Next up on the Diego Pacheco vs Kevin Lele Sadjo prelims was Sachery Sam (5-0, 2 KOs) against Brandon Medina Guerrero (7-4, 0 KOs) in the featherweight division.
It was a dominant performance from Sam, knocking his opponent down twice, on his way to a comfortable unanimous decision win, with scorecards of 58-54, 60-52, and 59-53.
Cesar Olvera vs Victor Saravia
The opening fight of the night was in the lightweight division, which saw Cesar Olvera (1-0-1, 1 KO) and Victor Saravia (1-6-3, 1 KO) fight to a majority scorecard, with one judge favouring the cleaner work of Olvera, scoring it 40-36. The other two judges had it 38-38.
