Mary Spencer vs. Mikaela Mayer fight recap
Mikaela Mayer’s (22-2, 5 KOs) aggression was simply too much for Mary Spencer (10-3, 6 KOs), allowing the American to win via unanimous decision.
Scores were 100-90 and 98-92 (x2). Mayer is now the WBA, WBC, and WBO super welterweight world champion with the win. She also became a three-weight world champion. Mayer was previously a unified super featherweight champion and is currently the WBO welterweight titleholder.
Mayer immediately started pressing forward and had success landing her power shots. She continued to do this in subsequent rounds. Spencer tightened up her defence following a rough opening round and was soon finding opportunities to land left hooks to the body. However, Mayer was still beating her to the punch on numerous occasions. Spencer had sought to keep Mayer at bay with the jab, but failed to do so.
Spencer initiated clinches in an effort to prevent Mayer from throwing a high volume of punches. This did not do much for the Canadian as the challenger continued to be aggressive. Spencer was rocked by a right hand in round nine. Mayer followed up with a barrage, but her opponent was able to stay on her feet. The reigning WBO welterweight champion carried on aggressively till the final bell. By then, she had done more than enough to secure the win.
