Title Fights From Around the World: Mizuki Hiruta and Carlos Cañizales Edition
Today, boxing world title fights take place around the globe and are more accessible to watch than ever before. Sometimes, championship bouts do not receive as much attention and go underreported. Big Fight Weekend commits to writing about boxing news, previews and recaps. As such, the site now has a recurring segment on championship bouts from around the world from the past week.
The focus of these pieces will be on clashes ranging from atomweight to heavyweight that had the WBA, WBC, IBF, and/or WBO titles on the line. This week’s edition of “Title Fights From Around the World” consists of two recaps. In the United States, a reigning super flyweight champion made another successful defence of her world title. Over in Venezuela, a new light flyweight champion was crowned.
Title Fights From Around the World: Mizuki Hiruta and Carlos Cañizales Edition
Mizuki Hiruta vs. Naomy Cardenas Fight Recap
Mizuki Hiruta (9-0, 2 KOs) retained her title with a dominant showing against Naomy Cardenas (9-1, 2 KOs).
Scores for their bout were 100-90 (x2) and 98-92. With the victory, Hiruta remains the WBO super flyweight world champion. She won the title in December 2022 against Kanako Taniyama. This was her fifth defence of the belt.
Hiruta-Cardenas took place on an August 15 360 Promotions card at the Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez, CA. Boxing fans around the world could catch the action live on UFC Fight Pass.
Cardenas struggled to land much of substance against the reigning champion. Hiruta had little trouble keeping her opponent at bay with the jab. Often, Cardenas would overextend on her punches. This gave Hiruta plenty of opportunities to land well-timed shots. Cardenas was aggressive and spent the duration of the contest coming forward. Despite this, she had little success and the decision ultimately went to Hiruta.
Panya Pradabsri vs. Carlos Cañizales 2 Fight Recap
Carlos Cañizales (28-3-1, 20 KOs) got his revenge against Panya Pradabsri (44-3, 27 KOs) with a fifth round knockout.
The official time of stoppage was 2:46. With the victory, Cañizales is now the WBC light flyweight world champion. The pair had previously fought each other in December of last year in Thailand. That bout saw Pradabsri win the then vacant title via majority decision.
Pradabsri-Cañizales 2 headlined an August 1 Venezuela Top Boxing card at the Poliedro de Caracas in Caracas, Venezuela. Fight fans across Latin America could catch the action live on ESPN KnockOut. Those in the United States could do so with ESPN Deportes.
Cañizales adopted an aggressive approach, coming forward and throwing swinging hooks. The Venezuelan was dominating proceedings until things took a dramatic turn in round four. Pradabsri landed an overhand right that sent Cañizales falling back onto the ropes. The referee ruled the sequence a knockdown and administered a count. Cañizales quickly recovered, however, and went back to dominating the fight. In round five, he landed a right and left hook to the body that sent Pradabsri to the canvas. The Thai fighter was unable to beat the count, giving Cañizales the knockout victory.
