Title Fights From Around the World: Claressa Shields and Oshae Jones Edition

Today, boxing world title fights take place around the globe and are more accessible to watch than ever before. Sometimes, championship bouts do not receive as much attention and go underreported. Big Fight Weekend commits to writing about boxing news, previews and recaps. As such, the site now has a recurring segment on championship bouts from around the world from the past week.

The focus of these pieces will be on clashes ranging from atomweight to heavyweight that had the WBA, WBC, IBF, and/or WBO titles on the line. This week’s edition of “Title Fights From Around the World” consists of two recaps. In the United States, an undisputed heavyweight champion made a successful defence of her titles. Elsewhere in the United States, a reigning super welterweight champion also defended her super welterweight world title.

Title Fights From Around the World: Claressa Shields and Oshae Jones Edition

Claressa Shields vs. Lani Daniels Fight Recap

Claressa Shields (17-0, 3 KOs) remained the undisputed heavyweight world champion with a unanimous decision win over Lani Daniels (11-3-2, 1 KO).

Scores for their bout were 100-90 and 99-91 (x2). With the victory, Shields made the first defence of her undisputed heavyweight status. She achieved the distinction earlier this year in February by defeating Danielle Perkins. Prior to the Perkins fight, Shields won the WBC heavyweight world title by beating Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse in July last year.

Shields-Daniels headlined a July 26 Salita Promotions card at the Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, MI. Boxing fans around the world could catch the action live exclusively on DAZN.

The fight got off to a slow start with Daniels choosing to move around the ring and not engage with the champion. Shields came forward to make the fight, but her opponent still did very little. Things picked up from the middle rounds onward, with both women trading. However, Shields showed off her class and was clearly winning rounds without much issue. In the end, she won wide on the scorecards and retained her undisputed championship.

Oshae Jones vs. Elia Carranza Fight Recap

Oshae Jones (9-0, 3 KOs) had a tough outing against Elia Carranza (11-2, 3 KOs) but ultimately prevailed via split decision.

While one judge had it 100-90 for Carranza, the other two saw it 98-92 and 96-94 for Jones. With the victory, she retains her IBF super welterweight world title. Jones won the belt in November last year against Femke Hermans. This was her first time defending the title.

Jones-Carranza took place on a July 25 Overtime Boxing card at the Tabernacle in Atlanta, GA. Fight fans around the world could catch the action live on DAZN. The card was also broadcast on the Overtime Boxing YouTube channel.

The early rounds saw Jones slowly push forward. Both women kept shooting out the jab in an attempt to establish their styles. Although Carranza kept things competitive, the reigning champion was just slightly better. While Jones was already the busier of the two going into the halfway stage of the fight, she picked up the pace slightly in the later rounds.

Although their clash was competitive, Jones did enough to have her hand raised in the end. She was able to outbox her opponent for stretches of the fight, clearly landing more. How one judge scored it 100-90 for Carranza is beyond comprehension (with all due respect to the challenger).
