Mario Barrios vs Pacquiao Ends In Draw

There was no winner in the main event, as hall of famer Manny Pacquiao and WBC welterweight champ Mario Barrios fought to a majority draw at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

The fight was intriguing as the 46 year old Pacquiao clearly didn’t look his age, as he stayed busy throughout the fight and outlanded the champ 81-75 on power shots over the 12 rounds. Barrios, now 29-2-2, for his part did outscore the Filipino legend 45-20 on jabs landed, but wasn’t nearly busy enough with that punch. The 30 year old Barrios was composed and never hurt in the bout, but will regret not being busier in the middle of the fight.

The judges cards were 114-114 x 2 and 115-113 on the third card.

Pacquiao was bidding to become the second oldest fighter to ever win a world title behind legend and fellow hall of famer Bernard Hopkins. And, after being inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame last month, Pacquiao would have been the first fighter to ever win world title after going into the hall.

For their part both fighters gave respect to the other and both said that they wanted a rematch.

On the Undercard:

Brandon Figueroa vs Joet Gonzalez

In the opening bout of the pay per view, former WBC junior featherweight champ Brandon Figueroa won a unanimous decision over veteran Joet Gonzalez in what was billed as a WBA eliminator at 126 lb.

Even though Gonzalez was more aggressive early on in the bout, Figueroa, now 25-2-1, 19 KOS, came on in the final four rounds. And, in the end, Figueroa scored more to the body inside late on Gonzalez and according to Compubox out-landed Gonzalez 282-265 in total punches.  The official scores read 116-112 x2 annd 115-113 on the third card, but many at ringside thought Gonzalez had done enough to win.

Still, the veteran Gonzalez drops to 27-4 with the defeat. Meanwhile, Figueroa, who lost twice previously, including his last bout to Stephen Fulton, now waits for a chance at a more prominent bout at featherweight.

Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz vs Orlando Salcido

Next up on the pay per view, Issac “Pitbull” Cruz won a near shutout 10 round decision over late replacement Omar Salcido. Salcido took the place of Angel Fiero, who was unable to come to the weigh in on Friday due to problems with dehydration.

The Mexican Cruz, now 28-3-1 with 18 KOs, pounded Salcido on the inside for the duration of the bout. He landed effectively with both hands to the body and put together repeated combinations to the head off of it. the final Compubox stats showed Cruz out punching fellow countryman Salcido, now 20-2, 190-74 in power punches.

Cruz nearly won the fight by TKO, as he dropped Salcido with a three punch barrage in the final :20 of the 10th. Salcido beat the count and survived the final seconds. This came after Salcido, who was obviously tired and hurt, had been deducted a point for holding earlier in the 10th.

In the end the scores read 99-89 x 2 and 100-88 for Cruz to get some satisfaction, even if he couldn’t rematch Fiero, whom he narrowly beat in February of this year.

Sebastian Fundora vs Tim Tszyu

In a wild rematch fight Sebastian “the Towering Inferno” Fundora successfully defended his WBC junior middleweight title with a TKO win over Tim Tszyu after the 7th round. Fundora scored a first round knockdown of the Australian Tszyu with a good, straight left hand. Tszyu was stunned but survived the round. From their Fundora, now 23-1-1, controlled the action using his 6 foot 1 inch height and long reach to batter Tszyu for much of the bout.

Tszyu began to land more in the fifth round, his best to that point and actually caught Fundora with a good right and bloodied his nose. However, Fundora landed more consistently with combinations in round six. Then, a wild seventh round saw both fighters land haymakers, but Tszyu, now 25-3, got the worst of it in close quarters. He was stunned at the end of his round and seemed unsure if he wanted to sit down in his corner and a few seconds later his corner told the referee to stop the fight. Fundora had out-landed Tszyu 118-68 in power shots that obviously took their toll.

The fight was a follow up to a March 2024 battle where Fundora won by split decision over Tszyu, handing him his first career defeat. Fundora had also won a title defense in March over Chordale Booker by 4th round TKO to set up the Tszyu rematch.
