Francisco Rodriguez Win Over Gal Yafai In Question

Mexican Francisco Rodríguez’s dominant, upset decision win June 21st over favored Brit Gal Yafai for the WBC interim flyweight title has now been called into question. This, after Rodriguez’s post fight drug test came back with an adverse finding for a PED.

Francisco Rodriguez post-fight, drug test problems

Rodriguez finding revealed Wednesday

Matchroom Boxing made the announcement mid-day Wednesday that all parties had been informed of the Rodriguez flagged “A Sample” after the bout. Their statement reads:

“Today, the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association informed Matchroom, the World Boxing Council and the British Boxing Board of Control that Francisco Rodriguez has returned an adverse analytical finding as part of a post-fight night anti-doping test following his bout with Galal Yafai on June 21st, 2025.

“The matter will be handled by the BBBofC and the WBC.”

The WBC operates in conjunction with VADA, which is usually more frequent and strenuous, for pre and post fight testing.

Rodriguez won the fight easily by landing a punch stat flyweight record 575 punches over the 12 round title fight and winning almost every round on the official cards 119‑108 X 2 and 118‑109 on the third. He punctuated the victory by his knockdown of Yafai in the 12th and final round.

However, the most impressive victory of the Mexican’s career will likely be overturned to a no-contest and Rodriguez will also likely, then be stripped of the interim WBC belt. Rodríguez’s team has the option to have the “B sample” also tested, but virtually every time the “B” sample shows the same as the “A.”

Recent post-fight drug test drama involving Jaime Munguia

Just last month, Mexico’s Jaime Munguia tested positive for banned substances with both his “A and B samples” for “exogenous testosterone metabolites” following his early May rematch win over Bruno Surace in Saudi Arabia. The BBBoC also administered that situation and could suspend Munguia for a year or more.

Back to the Rodriguez situation. Yafai, who suffered his first pro defeat in the bout, reacted with anger on Instagram Wednesday afternoon.

If Rodríguez’s result is confirmed positive and his win vacated, then more importantly, his potential showdown with Japan’s flywieght star Kenshiro Teraji, who holds the full WBC title and the WBA flyweight world championship, will also be over.
