World Title Fight Wins for Martínez, Meinke, Rosquero
Today, boxing world title fights take place around the globe and are more accessible to watch than ever before. Sometimes, championship bouts do not receive as much attention and go underreported. Big Fight Weekend commits to writing about boxing news, previews and recaps. As such, the site now has a recurring segment on championship bouts from around the world from the past week.
The focus of these pieces will be on clashes ranging from atomweight to heavyweight that had the WBA, WBC, IBF, and/or WBO titles on the line. This week’s edition of “Title Fights From Around the World” consists of three recaps. In Japan, a reigning world champion successfully defended his super flyweight title in a rematch. Over in Germany, the exact same happened at featherweight. In the United States, a super bantamweight title changed hands.
Title Fights From Around the World: Fernando Martínez, Nina Meinke and Mayelli Rosquero Victorious
Fernando Martínez vs. Kazuto Ioka 2 Fight Recap
Fernando Martínez (18-0, 9 KOs) once again emerged victorious via unanimous decision against Kazuto Ioka (31-4-1, 16 KOs).
Scores for their fight were 117-110, 115-112 and 114-113. With the win, Martínez retains his WBA super flyweight world title. He had won the belt in his first clash against Ioka in July last year. This was his first defence of the WBA strap following a reign as IBF super flyweight champion.
Martínez-Ioka 2 headlined a May 11 Shisei Promotions card at the Ota City General Gymnasium in Tokyo, Japan. Those in the country could catch the action live on Abema. Throughout Latin American it was broadcast on ESPN KnockOut.
Martínez threw a high volume of punches and pressed forward for much of the fight. While Ioka’s output was not as high, he was accurate and focused on the body. This allowed the Argentinian to have more success in the first half of the fight. Not long after the halfway point of the contest, Martínez showed signs of fatigue, resulting in him being outworked. By round nine, however, he seemed to have overcome it and continued as he had been.
In the tenth, Martínez was knocked down by two hooks. He got up, however, and made it out of the round. The reigning champion carried on with his high-volume approach till the final bell. In the end, he had done enough to convince the judges that he was the victor over Ioka.
Nina Meinke vs. Daniela Bermúdez 2 Fight Recap
Nina Meinke (20-3, 4 KOs) defeated Daniela Bermúdez (32-6-3, 12 KOs) once more, this time by unanimous decision.
Scores for their bout were 118-110 and 117-111 (x2). With the victory, Meinke retains her IBF featherweight world title. She won the belt in September last year with a majority decision win over Bermúdez. (Both fights were contested over 12 three-minute rounds instead of the standard 10 two-minute rounds).
Meinke-Bermúdez 2 took place on May 10 P2M Box-Promotion card at the Stadthalle in Rostock, Germany. Boxing fans around the world could catch the action live on PunchZone.
Meinke was mobile throughout the fight, something that her opponent struggled to deal with. For most of the contest, Bermúdez came forward to land her shots. Meinke’s movement allowed her to stay out of range of those shots while also landing her own from range. Her work over 12 rounds was enough to convince the judges of her victory.
Nazarena Romero vs. Mayelli Rosquero Fight Recap
Mayelli Rosquero (13-1-1, 4 KOs) became a world champion with a split decision win over Nazarena Romero (14-1-2, 8 KOs).
While one judge saw the action 98-92 for Romero, the other two had it 96-94 for Rosquero. With the victory, the Mexican is now the WBA super bantamweight world champion. Romero had only won the title in her last bout against Paulette Cuesta in August last year.
Romero-Rosquero took place on a May 10 ProBox card at the Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee, FL. Fight fans around the world could catch the action live on the ProBox YouTube channel. It was also available on the Fubo Sports YouTube channel.
In the opening round, Romero had success moving off the back foot. She landed hooks and chopping right hands as her opponent came forward. This continued into subsequent rounds, but eventually Rosquero was able to time her shots and make the fight more competitive. The final round saw both fighters swing for the fences. When it ended, both raised fists,an indication that they both believed they had done enough to win. Ultimately, it was Rosquero who had her hand raised to become the new super bantamweight champion.
