Three Keys to Victory for Rolly Romero vs Ryan Garcia

On May 2, Rolly Romero vs Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) will headline the historic Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves’ card in New York City. The event will be broadcast exclusively on DAZN PPV. This marks Garcia’s first fight since his controversial bout with Devin Haney, but Rolly Romero is here to spoil the party. Here are three keys to victory for Romero against Garcia.

Three Keys to Victory for Rolly Romero on May 2

Power

Romero (16-2, 13 KOs) will be up against it on May 2 when he faces Garcia in Times Square. He will need to be switched on for the entire fight otherwise the speed and power of “Kingry” could end the bout at any moment.

Romero will need to make the most of his attributes if he’s to cause the upset and his biggest weapon is his power. Gervonta Davis recently spoke to the media and described Rolly’s power: “He don’t have no chin now, so he be getting caught. But Rolly can hit bro – he can really hit.” The speed of Garcia will cause Rolly problems, but if the Las Vegas native can catch Garcia cold near the beginning of the fight, he could cause a shock.

Unpredictable Style

Rolly’s unorthodox style could be crucial in this fight. Rolly is adept at punching from varying angles, and it’s important he makes Garcia second-guess himself early on, making it harder for “Kingry” to let his power shots go.

He has to close the distance and try to bully Garcia on the inside. He must prevent “Kingry” from getting into a groove. Rolly should vary his punch selection, and when in close, tie Garcia up and frustrate him. If Rolly can upset Garcia’s rhythm, he has a chance.

Pressure

Romero’s best chance of scoring the upset is to stop Garcia from settling. Many expect Garcia to win comfortably on May 2, but Romero must apply pressure from the start. When he gets up close he needs to fire in shots from awkward angles and tie Garcia up to stop him settling.

He needs to be consistent with the pressure throughout the fight – and if Garcia leaves his chin exposed, Romero has to take advantage. If he lands clean, “Kingry” could be in trouble.

If he is to cause the upset, he must be at his unorthodox best and unsettle Garcia from the opening bell. If he can apply the pressure and make Garcia feel his power, Rolly could earn the biggest win of his career.
