George Foreman’s Top Five Greatest Wins

On March 21, the family of George Foreman released a statement via his Instagram account, announcing to the world that “Big George” had passed away aged 76. Inside and outside the ring Foreman’s legacy will live on, and Big Fight Weekend wanted to pay tribute to Foreman and bring you his five greatest wins.

Looking Back at George Foreman’s Five Greatest Wins

George Foreman vs Joe Frazier – January 22, 1973

The Sunshine Showdown between George Foreman and Joe Frazier took place at the National Stadium, in Kingston, Jamaica on January 22, 1973.

The WBA, WBC and The Ring undisputed heavyweight titles were on the line, with both fighters coming into the bout undefeated. It was explosive and memorable for the two rounds it lasted with “Big George” winning by second-round TKO. Foreman destroyed Frazier, scoring six knockdowns. The variation of power punches from “Big George” was most impressive. It was undoubtedly one of Foreman’s finest wins.

Michael Moorer – November 5, 1994

On November 5, 1994, 45-year-old George Foreman dared to be great and challenged Michael Moorer for the WBA and IBF heavyweight titles. Moorer boxed diligently throughout and consistently found a home for his power jab which was hurting and frustrating “Big George.”

The tenth round will forever be etched in boxing history. Moorer seemingly slowed, which enabled Foreman to land a smart combination with the right hand leaving Moorer flat on his back and ultimately being counted out by the referee. “Big George” became the oldest heavyweight champion in history, a record he still holds to this day.

Ken Norton – March 26, 1974

For the second defence of his titles – after defeating Frazier, Foreman faced Ken Norton at the Poliedro de Caracas, Caracas, Venezuela, on March 26, 1974.

It was a cagey opening round before Foreman stepped on the gas, knocking Norton down three times. “Big George” again showcased his one-punch power and his impressive combination punching. The final knockdown of three came from another combination that left his opponent flat on his back. Despite getting to his feet, referee Jimmy Rondeau decided to wave the fight off, awarding “Big George” the win by second-round TKO.

Ron Lyle – January 24, 1976

On January 24, 1976, at Caesars Palace, Sports Pavilion, Las Vegas, we were treated to a classic heavyweight fight, ultimately voted the 1976 Ring Magazine Fight of the Year. Both fighters came out of the traps quickly and traded knockdowns in a dramatic ding-dong battle. Foreman landed a series of hurtful punches in the fifth round to secure victory.

Not only did this fight showcase Foreman’s power again – it also showed his resilience, dragging himself off the canvas twice to stop his opponent.

George Chuvalo – August 4, 1970

The power of George Foreman was never more evident than it was on August 4, 1970, at Madison Square Garden, New York. He faced the uber-tough George Chuvalo.

Chuvalo was known for his granite chin, but the brute power and relentless aggression were too much for the Canadian. The constant power punching from Foreman was the main reason he obtained this impressive third-round TKO.

George Foreman will forever be remembered as one of the greatest heavyweights. His achievements in and out of the ring have helped solidify his legacy. His power was extraordinary – enabling him to score memorable wins against greats such as Joe Frazier and to take on Muhammad Ali in the much-renowned “Rumble in the Jungle.

His comeback to become world heavyweight champion at 45 enhanced his already legendary status. His career spanned decades with ups and downs, leaving an undeniable mark on the heavyweight division. Rest in Peace George Foreman.
