Canelo vs Jake Paul: MVP Slams Boxing Politics After Failed Talks

The boxing rumour mill has been in overdrive during the last 48-72 hours, with Canelo Alvarez at the centre of these rumours. A rumoured mega-fight against Terence Crawford was on and then off. It was seemingly replaced by a fight between Canelo and novice cruiserweight/social media personality Jake Paul.

It appears after some uncertainty, Canelo’s plans seem more settled, with Turki Alalshikh announcing a four-fight deal between Alvarez and Riyadh Season. Following the news that Paul-Canelo will not happen Most Valuable Promotions has released a statement to clarify the reported negotiations for the fight and subsequent collapse.

Canelo vs Jake Paul: Most Valuable Promotions Release Statement

MVP Fire Back After Canelo vs Jake Paul Talks Collapse

“MVP was deep in negotiations for a blockbuster fight between Jake Paul and Canelo Alvarez on Cinco de Mayo weekend in Las Vegas, a massive event for the Mexican, Puerto Rican and American fans, and it’s disappointing to see how the situation unfolded. MVP operates with integrity, transparency, and respect for the sport, its athletes, and the fans. Unfortunately, not everyone in the boxing world shares those values.

This situation is a reminder not to believe everything you read, especially when the current media environment is often controlled by those with hidden agendas, including promoters who have reporters on their payroll.

We remain in active discussions with multiple high-profile opponents and are committed to delivering the biggest fights, the most exciting events, and to working with partners who share our values and our commitment to boxing and its fighters.

Jake Paul isn’t going anywhere, and neither is MVP. We’ll continue to disrupt boxing, on our terms.”

Next for Canelo

With this move, Canelo has made it clear that his next four fights will be with Riyadh Season. It remains to be seen who the opponents will be. It seems likely that Terence Crawford will now be the September opponent, but that still leaves three opponent slots open. Having Canelo on Riyadh Season again demonstrates the strong allure of these loaded fight cards and the financial rewards they bring. Where does that leave Jake Paul after the biggest fight for him falls apart?
