The 5 Best Lennox Lewis Fights in His Career
Lennox Lewis enjoyed an impressive amateur career, winning an Olympic Gold medal and defeating Riddick Bowe for Canada in 1988. Sports Guide for sports betting would have been invaluable whenever Lewis stepped into the ring, as it was nearly impossible not to wager on his victory. Let us take a look at five of his greatest fights to cultivate a deeper understanding of what his name truly stands for.
Five Greatest Fights of Lennox Lewis
Andrew Golota
Andrew Golota came into the bout against Lewis having suffered two DQ losses to Riddick Bowe. The Polish fighter was dangerous because he was so volatile, but the Brit soon pounced, landing a big right hand, followed by a six-punch combination, knocking him to the floor. Despite beating the count, Lewis unleashed another sustained attack forcing the referee to wave the fight off after a mere 95 seconds. This victory brought by Lewis was one of the brightest moments in his career.
Mike Tyson
Even though the fight did not happen at the pinnacle of Mike Tyson’s career, it remains a memorable point in Lewis’s career. Since the ‘90s, Tyson was not that invincible monster, yet his intimidating left hooks were quite present. However, thanks to Lewis’s immense endurance and strength, the chapter of Tyson was finally over, finished with a massive right hand from the Brit.
Ray Mercer
On May 10, 1996, Lewis faced fellow 1988 Olympic Gold Medalist Ray Mercer, who pushed Lewis as both men went back and forth throughout the first few rounds. Both had huge success in an entertaining fourth round. Despite throwing bombs for the remainder of the fight, neither scored a knockdown. Lewis and Mercer were visibly marked up by the end of the fight with the Brit edging a majority decision win, with the scorecards reading 95-95, while the other two both scored it for Lewis, 96-95 and 96-94 respectively. A tough test for the Brit, who toughed out a memorable victory.
Evander Holyfield
Being 34 years old at that time (1999), Lennox Lewis slayed the esteemed Evander Holyfield for the undisputed crown. Both fought to a controversial draw in their first encounter, with many feeling the British fighter had done enough to get the verdict. The sanctioning bodies rightfully ordered a rematch. The second fight was more entertaining but Lewis rightfully got the verdict unanimously 115–113, 116–112 and 117–111, crowning him the undisputed heavyweight king.
Vitali Klitschko
In the final fight of his career, Lewis faced Vitali Klitschko at the Staples Center, Los Angeles. The Ukrainian started strongly – and wobbled the Brit in the second round before Lewis opened a nasty cut above Klitschko’s eye with a right cross which was the beginning of improvement from Lewis. Both men looked exhausted before the start of round seven when the doctor advised the fight should be stopped with the Ukrainian leading 58–56 on all three judges’ scorecards. This win aged incredibly well for Lewis as “Dr. Ironfist” went on to win the final 13 fights of his career before retiring to embark on a political career.
