Galal Yafai Addresses Bam Rodriguez Fight Talks with Defiant Response

On Saturday, November 30, at the bp pulse LIVE, Birmingham, Galal Yafai (9-0, 7 KOs) delivered a beatdown against Sunny Edwards (21-2, 4 KOs) to win the vacant WBC interim world flyweight crown. It was the main event of a Matchroom Boxing card live on DAZN. Following this impressive win, attention quickly turned to what the future could hold for Yafai. Eddie Hearn and others spoke about potential bouts against WBC world champion Kenshiro Teraji and a future move up in weight to face Bam Rodriguez. The Birmingham fighter has spoken to the George Groves Boxing Club about a potential future clash with Rodriguez.

Galal Yafai Responds to Bam Rodriguez Fight Speculation

Yafai Rules Out Moving up in Weight

Yafai was exemplary against Edwards, he attacked from the first bell and made Sunny feel his power in the first round. The Birmingham fighter never looked back and used his feet to close the gap brilliantly, but also used his jab when needed to maintain distance. Everything he did was brilliant and he bossed every second of every round and deserved the TKO win.

He was asked on the George Groves Boxing Club about a potential fight with Jesse Rodriguez, and the WBC interim flyweight champion said: “Bam is a weight above me number one. He’s a two-weight world champion. He’s in the pound-for-pound rankings – now here’s me. I’m nine fights in. I’m the weight below. I’m 31, which I’m probably not gonna go up because I make the weight really easy. I make flyweight easy.”

Making Right Decisions

The 2020 Olympic gold medallist revealed what it would take for him to move up in weight: “For me to really go up – it would be silly really because I’m fighting the best guy at the weight, who is massive compared to me. The only reason I’d be fighting him is for a lot of money.”

He added: “It would be stupid for me to wanna go up a weight when I make my weight really easy. I’m making my job really hard going up to fight someone whose really good.”

“I ain’t gotta live off Bam Rodruiguez’s name. I’m Olympic champion,” said Yafai.
