Katie Taylor (24-1, 6 KOs) once again emerged victorious against Amanda Serrano (47-3-1, 31 KOs), this time winning via unanimous decision.

All three judges had the contest 95-94 for Taylor. With the victory, she remains the undisputed super lightweight champion. Taylor became undisputed following a majority decision win over Chantelle Cameron in November last year.

Fight Recap

For most of the opening round, both fighters were pawing at each other. Serrano began to press forward in an attempt to trap her opponent along the ropes. She was eventually rewarded for doing that as the Puerto Rican landed an overhand land that stunned Taylor in the closing seconds of the round.

Though Taylor was able to make it out of round one without hitting the canvas, she struggled with Serrano’s pressure in subsequent rounds. The challenger was the busier of the two and having better success landing her punches. In round four, Serrano was cut by her right eye following a clash of heads, a spot she continued to bleed from till the end of the fight.

Taylor stuck to moving around the ring and countering when possible, but her opponent’s pressure continued to give her problems. In round six, Serrano’s cut worsened and the fight was paused to allow a ringside physician to examine it. The bout continued but the cut was clearly bothering the Puerto Rican.

From the seventh onwards, both fighters would go toe-to-toe, landing clean, hard shots on each other till the very end. Neither woman relented. In round eight, Taylor was deducted a point due to the excessive headbutting. Despite that, she did not change her approach and continued to exchange at close quarters with Serrano. In round 10 with both fighters visibly exhausted, Taylor and Serrano traded away with reckless abandon.

In the end, Serrano had appeared to have done more and appeared confident in getting the decision. However, the three judges ringside preferred what Taylor did and awarded her the decision, allowing her to remain undisputed super lightweight champion.

Post-fight Interviews

Katie Taylor

“Well, it’s obviously very hard to tell during the fight [who won],” said Taylor. “But, it was an absolute slugfest in there. An absolute war. Just thank God I won this fight. Congratulations to Amanda. She’s a fantastic champion. I think we agreed to do 12 three-minute rounds in our next fight. The triple is on.”

“That’s [rebounding] what a boxer does. We train so hard to recover from those moments. Any punch can change a fight in boxing. She’s a hard puncher. She’s a very tough warrior and I was prepared for that. I don’t care if the commentary team or the crowd disagrees with the result. The only ones that matter are the judges around the ring. So, thank God.”

Amanda Serrano

“Listen, I knew if it went to the judges it was going to be a little shady,” said Serrano. “But listen, I came here, I chose to be great. I went up three weight divisions…I dared to be great tonight and I went up three weight divisions…It is what it is. I’m a featherweight, man.”

“Listen, every time you get a get it bothers you. You get blood in your eye, it hurts. She kept headbutting me, but we knew that from the very beginning from the first fight. That’s what they do. It’s not only my fight. She did it with Chantelle Cameron. Listen, I’m a Boricua. Imma die in this ring no matter what. No matter how many cuts I have on my face, imma die till the very end.”
