Boxing at the Olympics: Day 14 Results
Asadkhuja Muydinkhujaev Wins Second Boxing Gold for Uzbekistan
Asadkhuja Muydinkhujaev (Uzbekistan) outboxed Marco Verde (Mexico) en route to winning a gold medal.
All five judges had Muydinkhujaev winning 29-28. With the points victory, he wins the men’s 71kg competition at the Olympics. It is also Uzbekistan’s second boxing gold medal of the tournament.

Muydinkhujaev moved around the ring, forcing his opponent to chase him around the ring. The Uzbek would dart in and out to land his punches, something he was regularly having success with. This continued in the second round and it was clear that no matter what Verde did, he could still not land at the same rate as Muydinkhujaev. Till the final bell, Verde was made to chase. Anytime he closed the distance, Muydinkhujaev would either clinch or move away. As a result, the Uzbek won on all the judges scorecards.
Omari Jones (United States) and Lewis Richardson (Great Britain), who lost to Muydinkhujaev and Verde in the semifinals respectively, won bronze in the men’s 71kg competition.
Wu Yu Outpoints Buse Naz Çakıroğlu
Wu Yu (China) won her country’s second boxing gold medal at the Paris Olympics with a points win over Buse Naz Çakıroğlu (Türkiye).
While one judge had Çakıroğlu winning 29-27, the other four saw Yu winning 29-27. With the victory, Yu wins the women’s 50kg competition. It was also the second instance of a Chinese boxer defeating a Turkish opponent to win Olympic gold.

Çakıroğlu boxed off of the backfoot and sought to counter Yu, who was coming forward and more aggressive. The Turk changed things up in round two, becoming more assertive and exchanging simultaneously with her opponent. Çakıroğlu continued this approach in the third, but Yu made things difficult with her roughhousing. The boxer from China threw her opponent to the canvas on more than one occasion and nearly sent them both out of the ring. Eventually, Yu was deducted a point in round three. Despite the point deduction, four judges saw her doing enough to win the fight.
Nazym Kyzaibay (Kazakhstan) and Aira Villegas (The Philippines), who lost to Yu and Çakıroğlu in the semifinals respectively, won bronze in the women’s 50kg competition.
Lazizbek Mullojonov Wins Another Gold for Uzbekistan
Lazizbek Mullojonov (Uzbekistan) did not have to do much to win his country’s third boxing gold medal at the Paris Olympics.
The Uzbek defeated Loren Alfonso (Azerbaijan) via points. All five judges had Mullojonov winning 30-27. With the victory, he is the winner of the men’s 92kg competition.

Both fighters opted for a patient approach in round one with neither taking too many risks. Of the two, Mullojonov was the one pressing forward and the slightly more active. Alfonso moved off the backfoot and sought to counter, but couldn’t land much. All this continued into round two, allowing Mullojonov to extend his lead. Alfonso continued to throw few punches in the third, allowing his opponent to win easily.
Enmanuel Reyes Pla (Spain) and Davlat Boltaev (Hungary), who lost to Alfonso and Mullojonov in the semifinals respectively, won bronze in the men’s 92kg competition.
Imane Khelif Wins Gold for Algeria
Imane Khelif (Algeria) won gold for her country with a points win against Yang Liu (China).
All five judges had her winning the contest 30-27. As a result, she wins the women’s 66kg tournament. Khelif’s victory is only the second time Algeria has won boxing gold at the Olympics, the first being Hocine Soltani in 1996.

The opening round saw Liu stay mostly on the outside and have some success with straight punches. However, Khelif was landing the more telling blows whenever she got close. The majority of the fight saw neither fighter throw a high volume of punches. Rather, they remained patient while seeking opportunities to land. The Algerian landed the more impactful shots throughout the contest, giving her the points win.
Janjaem Suwannapheng (Thailand) and Chen Nien-chin (Chinese Taipei), who lost to Khelif and Liu in the semifinals respectively, won bronze in the women’s 66kg competition.
