Erislandy Álvarez Wins Cuba’s Only Boxing Gold Medal

Erislandy Álvarez Borges (Cuba) won his country’s only boxing gold medal of the 2024 Olympics with a points victory over Sofiane Oumiha (France).

Two judges had Oumiha winning 29-28. One had it 30-27 for Álvarez while the remaining two saw it 29-28. With the win, Álvarez is the gold medalist for the men’s 63.5kg tournament. He is also Cuba’s only gold medal winner for this Olympics as his country’s only other boxing medalist had to settle for bronze.

The fight began with Álvarez gradually pressing forward. Halfway through the opening round, both men let their hands go against each other. Álvarez had the greater success landing his punches between the two, something that was reflected in the judge’s scores (they all scored the round for the Cuban). The second round was fought at a high pace, with Álvarez landing several eye-catching punches to the head and body. Oumiha kept things competitive, however, and countered with hard shots of his own in rounds two and three as Álvarez was tiring. In the end, three of the judges had deemed Álvarez to have done enough to get the win.

Lasha Guruli (Georgia) and Wyatt Sanford (Canada), who lost in the semifinals to Álvarez and Oumiha respectively, won bronze medals in the men’s 63.5kg event.

Oleksandr Khyzhniak Wins Gold on Second Attempt

Oleksandr Khyzhniak (Ukraine) finally won a gold medal in his second Olympic final with a points victory over Nurbek Oralbay (Kazakhstan)

Two judges had the clash 29-28 in favour of Oralbay. While one judge saw it 29-28 for Khyzhniak, the remaining two had it 30-27, giving him the gold medal in the men’s 80kg tournament. The Ukrainian had also made it to the final of the Tokyo Olympics and was ahead going into round three against Hebert Conceição. However, a left hook knocked Khyzhniak out and he had to settle for a silver medal at the time.

Khyzhniak got off to an aggressive start, pressing forward and throwing a high volume of punches. Oralbay sought to counter, but his shots appeared to have no impact on his opponent’s tactics. Khyzhniak continued to throw away in round two, but Oralbay started to have better success with his counters. However, the Kazakh was also bleeding from his nose.A cut around his right eye did pause the action momentarily in round three, but the fight was allowed to continue. Khyzhniak continued landing punches in bunches to the head and body, allowing him to sweep the third round on all five scorecards and win the contest.

Arlen López Cardona (Cuba) and Cristian Javier Pinales (Dominican Republic), who lost in the semifinals to Khyzhniak and Oralbay respectively, won bronze medals in the men’s 80kg event.
