Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis Talks Prison, 14-month Layoff and Upcoming Title Defence Against Frank Martin on June 15
On Saturday, June 15, Gervonta “Tank” Davis (29-0, 27 KOs) will take on Frank Martin (18-0, 12 KOs) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas for Davis’ WBA lightweight title, live on Prime Video PPV, and through our friends atPPV.com. Ahead of his next fight against Martin, “Tank” has spoken to Dan Rafael about his lengthy layoff, the upcoming fight and much more.

‘Tank’ Talks Lengthy Layoff and Frank Martin
After exchanging pleasantries, Rafael asked “Tank” why he didn’t appear at the grand arrivals event, and “Tank” said: “Man, you know how they had the fights up, and they had the big bandana of fighters on the MGM – why they ain’t put me up there.” He continued: “Why wasn’t I up there.”
He continued: “This fight, I feel as though they not doing enough,” said Davis.

When asked about his win over Ryan Garcia and if he feels that was his biggest fight, he said: “I feel as though it was my biggest fight.” He continued: “It was a huge event. It was two young superstars going at each other, undefeated.”
When asked about the magnitude of the Martin fight, and if it was difficult to motivate himself after the Garcia fight: “It’s not hard.” He went on to explain he feels Martin and Garcia are on a similar technical level.

Prison, 14 Month Layoff and Moving to 140 Pounds
Rafael then asked Davis how difficult it was to go to prison after the high of defeating Garcia: “It was hard once I first got in there because I felt like I was getting out.” He continued: “Once I knew I was staying in there, it was like OK. I got to do my time.”

He then asked the WBA champ about leaving prison and returning to the boxing mentality, “Tank” said: “As soon as I got out, that was my line. Just to get back focussed. That’s why I started training while I was in there.”

When asked about being as sharp as he was after a 14-month layoff, the Baltimore fighter answered without hesitation: “I’m really not sure until I get in there, but I’m for sure that I’ve been doing this for so long, so I don’t think that 14 months (will affect me).”
When asked about what future fights he would like, Tank said: “I’m open to fight all of them.” Following this he confirmed his desired weight is 135 pounds.
“Tank” then spoke about the potential of moving up to 140 pounds, and said: “If it’s a great opportunity, like a great fight opportunity then yeah, but other than that I’m not rushing to go to 140.”
